• Seddon Atkinson will be using next week's Tipcon show to launch the lightest Strato sixwheeler capable of operating at 26 tonnes.
The Oldham-based truck maker has extended the shortest (4.250m-wheelbase) Strato IC 26.28L chassis to 4.520m. This allows an outer axle spread of 5,206m — sufficient to allow it to be plated to next year's 26tonne three-axle rigid limit.
Stretching the wheelbase has added some 20kg to the Cummins C-Series-powered Strato six-wheeler, which now tares in at 7,003kg.
Strato six-wheelers running at 26 tonnes will also be specified with 295/80 R22.5 tyres on 8.25 rims, providing a 7.1-tonne front-axle capacity.
The first 5.20m OAS TC26.28L goes to RW Edwards and Son of Ruthin, North Wales. In addition to the longer wheelbase it has a low-height package, comprising a lowered chassis, reduced-height cab and a Petreg air intake, which can lower the cab by up to 380mm.
The 5.02m OAS TC26.28L chassis is the shortest Strato sixwheeler capable of running at 26 tonnes GVW; Seddon already offers a longer 5.050m-wheelbase chassis which provides an outer axle spread of 5.736m — well within the 5.02m OAS stipulation, but longer than many tipper operators want.
Seddon Atkinson's lightest six-wheeler is the Motor Panelscabbed 6x4 chassis, but this won't be offered at 26-tonnes.
