The Metropolitan LA, Mr D. I. R. uir, decided to take no action last week a Section 69 inquiry although a vehicle amines inspection of nine vehicles .had :cessitated the issue of one delayed and re immediate GV9s:

The vehicle examiner, Mr R. Powell, said at the company, Goodman Price -ansport Ltd, with a depot at West rayton, had 14 vehicles for use in its sand id gravel business.. At the time of his spection in August last year one of the :hides was issued with an immediate GV9 cause of brake faults but when presented r clearance at a testing station later the iginal faults were still present. Several her vehicles had steering faults and Mr )well suggested to the company that the onthly inspections were not frequent .ough in view of the on-off road work that e vehicles were required to do. Fortnightly spections were recommended and were Av being carried out.

Mr Powell also expressed doubts as to hether the two skilled and one semi-skilled ter employed were sufficient to carry out .e necessary work.

L. Wilkin, director of the mipany," said that an inspection pit msidered too short for the eight-wheeled !hides was now being extended and iggestions made by Mr Powell relating to meral maintenance were now being Although they were not considered as ridence in the hearing Mr Wilkin was iestioned by the LA about overloading Tences in 1969 and 1970.

Mr Wilkin answered that the offences all curred when carrying rubbish from building sites and he explained the impossibility of accurately judging The weight being carried; invariably there was no weighbridge available. Mr Wilkin said he had sought guidance from the DoE but so far no possible solution to the problem had been forthcoming. The only remedy was to ensure under-loading and be very strict with any driver for weight infringements.

Giving his decision to take no action Mr Muir said he was satisfied that steps were being taken to improve the situation but warned of severe penalties if there was any evidence of maintenance breakdown.
