Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE description of the standard Leyland Beaver with livestock container, illustrated in " The Commercial Motor" on February 20, is, in our opinion, misleading to those who might consider buying a similar, type. It was said that the vehicle would accommodate (a) 50 sheep, equally divided between the upper and lower decks, (b) 30 pigs on the lower deck, (c) 12 averagesized cows, or (d) nine horses.

A34

. Assuming that, the container was about 17 ft. 6 ins. long and of full width, it could carry 10 average, cows of.10.cwt. each, or, with both decks full, 70 large sheep each of 120 lb. live weight. According to the description, it could accommodate 50 sheep, which Would weigh some 53 cwt., or 12 cows (6 tons), or nine horses, but we consider. this a most 'dangerous practice if the horses be aged. If the figures given be correct, the sizes of cattle, sheep and horses in Northern Ireland must be very different from those in this country.

Sutton CoIdfield. E. W. WATTS.

(For E. W. Watts (Haulage), Ltd.)

tWe are informed that the container is 17 ft. 6 ins. long, • 7 ft. wide over the sides, and 6 ft. 9 ins, high at the centre. The number of sheep accommodated should have been given as 50 on each deck, making a total -of. 10. The Northern Ireland Road Transport Board, which operates the vehicle, confirms that the body will accommodate nine horses, according to size, and 12 cows of average
