Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

a recent article concerning Liver pool's Transport • Department that people prefer to ride on buses. Actually, we are to be forced to travel in these whether we like it or not, as the Corporation. seems to take. no interest in the wishes of the travelling public.

So far, in this city, there have been several well-supported public meetings against the all-bus plan, also a Gallup poll in which 80 per cent. voted for modern tramcars.

Furthermore, when the Corporation was challenged to a public vote on the question it refused, so that it does not look 4s though it had great faith in the tramscrapping project.

What we need in Liverpool is a modern bus and tram system, each type of vehicle being •used, on those. routes most suitable for it. J. W. GAHAN.

Liverpool, 13. .

[We are certainly surprised to learn that .the people of Liverpool are so pleased with their tramway system. This was not our impression and we have 'noted. that here, as elsewhere, wherever trams and. buses work along the same routes, the buses are usually preferred. At present, of course; as workmen's fares apply only tci, the trams, this is an inducement to travel in them. The great trouble in your city is, however, that it would cost an immense amount Of money to rehabilitate the lines, whilst the tramcars would have to be either rebuilt or replaced. A33 • Here, •again, the expense would .he considerable. We : understand that their age makes their operation uneconomic. Apart from this, traffic conditions are usually Muchimproved• by the substitution of buses for trams, the vehicle restricted to rails being an anachronism in these times of mobile transport units.—Eo.1
