A.R.O. BID FOR T.A.C. NOMINEE.

There was a record attendance at the third annual dinner of A,R.O. Cambridge Sub-area, last Saturday, under tbc chairmanship of Mr. H. 0. Newport, immediate past thairnran of the sub-area.

Alderman A. E. Studde congratulated the Association on its membership, and said that the industry was late in realizing that success could not be achieved without proper organization.

The Mayor of Cambridge remarked on the double responsibility of employers, not only for omissions of their own, but for those of their employees.

Mr. G. W. Irwin (vice-chairman, Eastern Area) referred to the complete lack of representation of A.R.°, on the Transport Advisory Council, and reminded Lieut.-Col. Tufnell, M.P., one of the distinguished visitors, that the Minister of Transport still had three vacant seats on that council, and suggested that one might be granted to an A.R.O, nominee.

Col. Tufnell said that whatever the Minister might wish to do for the industry, he was, in the last resort, under the thumb of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who had to take into consideration the policy of the Government and the country as a whole. He could not help feeling thaf the Government was beginning to realize the vital necessity of road transport to this country.

Among the speakers was Mr. P. J. Authors, Eastern Area secretary.

New Scottish I.M.T. Officers.

At the ninth annual meeting of the Edinburgh and South-east Scotland centre of the Institute of the Motor Trade the following office-bearers were appointed:— Chairman. Mr. George R. SCOTTISH CONFERENCE IN MAY.

The annual confer,ence of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association is to be held at Pitlochry from May 2022, when delegates will be present from the municipal undertakings and ths Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., and allied companies.

Papers are to be read by Mr. V. R. Beveridge, of the S.M.T. concern, and Mr. Norman A. Hardie, of the B.R.F.

Yorkshire A.R.O. Gaining Strength.

Enrolment of a considerable number of new members in -the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O. since branch offices were opened at Hull and Sheffield, was reported at a meeting of the Yorkshire Area's new haulage sectional board, at Leeds, last Friday.

CM.U.A. Official in East London.

Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer of the C.M.U.A., has been invited to address a meeting of the East London Hauliers Association to be held at the Green Man Hotel, Plashet Grove, London, E.6, on May 4, at 8 p.m. Mr. Hinder will speak on " The Future of the Road Transport Industry."

YORKSHIRE A.R.O. ELECTS HAULAGE REPRESENTATIVES.

.Mr. J. M. Bright, of A. J. Fryer, Ltd., Selby, was elected chairman of the newly formed haulage sectional board for the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., at a meeting in Leeds, last Friday. He was a founder-member of' the old Long-Distance Road Haulage Association and was one of the first members of the national council of the Road Haulage Association.

Mr. J. T.' Rodwell, of T. Rodwell and Son, Ltd., Wombwell, was appointed vice-chairman of the board. He was a member of the executive committee of the old Yorkshire Stage Carriage Operators' Association, now merged in A.R.O., and has been a member of the employers' panel of the Yorkshire Joint Conciliation Board since the inception of that body.

The haulage committees of the four divisions into which the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O. is now divided have elected the following to be their chairmen:— Central, Mr. .T. M. Bright (Selby); South, Mr. A. Beresiord (Sheffield); East, Mr. R. E. Britton (Hull); North Eastern, Mr. A. • Banks (York),

Representatives of these divisional committees on the haulage sectional board for Yorkshire are:—

Central: Messrs, 3. M. Bright (Selby), A. H. Batterwiek (Leeds), H. Pickard (Dewslfury), W. H. Hoyle (Halifax), H. Wilkinson (Rudders-. field), R. G. Crowther (Wakefield), J. W. Bulmer (Bothwell) and Stndor (Cools).

South: Messrs. A. Beresford {Sheffield), J. T. Rodwell (Wombwell], H. Redgard (Doncaster), G. Dalton (Hope), and A. Boyle (Sheffield). East: Messrs. R. E. Britton (Hull), B. S. Annison (Hull), S. Bays Mull) and W. Grasby (Hull). Capt. Marshall (Hull) has also been elected to act as deputy to Mr. Annison. North Eastern: Messrs. A. C. Bell (Searner, near Scarborough), A. Banks (York) and H. W. Gill (York). The following have also been appointed to act as deputy mernbers:—Messrs. ..F..D. Dennis (Borton, Malton), J. W. Suteline (York) and O. Oliver (York).

The haulage sectional board has elected Messrs. Bright, Beresford, Gill, Redgard, Rodwell and Annison to be its representatives on the Yorkshire area board.

. In addition, the Board has nominated Messrs. Studor, Rodwell and Gill as A.R.O. representatives on the employers' panel of the Yorkshire Concilation Board.

New A.R.O. Nottingham Committee.

The following have been elected to the new Nottingham committee of A.R.O.:—Messrs. L. Seymour, W. P. Clark, P. Smith, A. R. Marshall, G. F. Chambers, R. Keetch, W. Kellam, C. M. Stead, F. S. Gel] and T. Blythe.

At a meeting at Nottingham, last week, addressed by Major Eric Long and Mr. P. J. Anthers, reports were made on the progress with the reconstitution of the East Midland Area and satisfaction was expressed by members.

Mr. F. G. Bristow at International Conference.

Mr. F. G. Bristow, C.B.E., is representing the C.M.I.J.A. at the First International Safety Conference, which is being held at Amsterdam, and on April 28 is submitting a paper on "The Best Way of Imparting Road Sense."

Mr. Bristow was one of the founders of the National "Safety First" Association in 1916 and chairman of the national public safety committee of the N.S.F.A. for many years.

ACTIVE WORK ON PRACTICAL ISSUES IN THE WEST.

A.R.O. Devon and Cornwall Area has been informed that, in future, Cornwall Meat Trade Association will use only fully insured transport. The latter organization has pointed out the need for insuring against risks of suffocation of animals in transit. A meeting of £R..0. members is to be held to consider rates for this class of work.

A.R.O. has been in touch with Cornwall County Council concerning the provision of transport in connection with air-raid precautions and a county committee is being set up to deal with the matter.

The area is to take up the question of constructing a bridge across the River Tamar, direct with the Minister of Transport, Cornwall County Council being unwilling to support the movement while Torpoint terry is still in existence.

M.P. to Support C.M.U.A. Meeting.

At a meeting of the G.M.I.J.A. to be held at Park Senior School, Grays, on April 28, at 8 p.m., the chair will be taken by Mr. Victor Raikes, M.P. Mr. W. A. Winson, president of the Association, will also speak, and he will be supported by Mr. F. F. Fowler, chairman of the London and Home Counties Division, and Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer.

The question of the Dartford Tunnel tolls will be discussed fully and hauliers interested in this important matter sbould make a special point of attending.
