.911-1AT the motor tractor has 1 during the past few years gained a much firmer footing in agriculture in this country is obvious to all who are concerned with farming or who are interested in the progress of the tractor. That is why the Royal Agricultural Society of England, in conjunction with the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, has decided to carry out, in the vicinity of Oxford, during 1930, an exhaustive test of tractors, the trial being followed by a public demonstration. The tests, which will not be open to the public, will take place over a long period from June 1st to September 1st.
In a report issued a few days ago the R.A.S.E. states that 10 years have elapsed since tractor trials were held in the United Kingdom and it is thought that the time has c28
• arrived when such trials must be inaugurated for the purpose of making exacting tests of improvements in these appliances, particularly those intended for general purposes. Extensive developments have occurred since 1919 as regards both the machine itself and its ancillary equipment, such as new methods of adhesion, couplings and other devices. The tractor is playing an important part in agriculture, but, since the occurrence of the trials already referred to, no exact data have been available to show to the farmer thr?, new possibilities offered by, and improvements made in, the tractor in connection with general farming operations.
With the object of placing such definite information at the agriculturist's disposal it is thought that a tractor trial of an extensive character (the competing vehicles being of foreign as well as British origin) would serve to produce the desired result. The tractor trials so far held in this country have incorporated both demonstration and test simultaneously, which, from their character, made it impossible to collect the scientific am]. economic data necessary to give an accurate and precise opinion of the performance of each machine and its various devices. Consequently, it is proposed to change the methods of the trials in 1930.
