By Chris Tindall AN EDDIE STOBART driver has appeared in court after being charged with two counts of arson attacks on the haulier’s Scania trucks.

Ronald Day, 53, from Winsford, appeared in Macclesield Magistrates Court on Friday (16 September) and has been remanded in custody.

According to Cheshire police he is charged with arson following an incident at Stobart’s yard in Chelford on 15 September, in which a tractor unit was set alight.

He is also charged with a similar offence at a yard in South Mimms, Hertfordshire on 13 June.The two blazes caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

A Stobart spokesman says: “After a thorough investigation in partnership with Scania in relation to a recent spate of ires associated with Scania tractor units in Eddie Stobart’s leet, it became apparent that an individual may have been responsible. The individual was placed under investigation and after receiving conclusive evidence yesterday was arrested by Cheshire constabulary.

“Ronald Day, an Eddie Stobart truck driver was then charged with two counts of arson and appeared in court this morning. He was remanded in custody. It’s suspected that he may have been responsible for a further 14 ires and this is currently under investigation. Once it became apparent that an individual was responsible, Eddie Stobart has worked swiftly and in full co-operation with Cheshire constabulary to bring a speedy resolution to the matter.” Day will return to the court in Macclesield on 23 September.

In August a ire occurred at Eddie Stobart’s depot in Crick, Northants. No employees or individuals at the depot were injured as a result of the accident, which involved one Scania in the Stobart leet. This incident has not been linked with the above arson.
