IRIS11 TRUCKERS have shown their displeasure at spiralling fuel prices by organising a 90-mile protest convoy, from the border with the North at Moybridge,Monaghan, to the centre of Dublin.
Twenty trucks left Moybridge and were joined by others on the route to Dublin.
Kieran McKenna, boss of K McKenna Haulage, based at Clones, Co Monaghan, says: "Three of us started this the other day. People laughed at us, but we've got great support now."
McKenna used to be a member of the Irish Road Haulage Association, but says he is disillusioned with its response to the fuel crisis. While Irish fuel costs are more than 20% lower than in the UK, price rises are still causing difficulties for the industry.
However, the IRHA has delivered a stark warning to the Irish government that its members cannot absorb the rising costs. It says fuel duty needs to he cut by a third to prevent widespread 'rationalisation' in the industry.
IRHA spokesman Vincent Caulfield says: "There's a Budget approaching in early December. We say a lot of people [in the industry] won't live that long."
