MAN's NEW lightweight has to be one of the leading contenders for the 2006 award, as the new truck scores on a number of important points. The lightweight 7.5-tonner has addressed some of the payload concerns: driver environment has been upgraded with a TGA-style interior and service intervals have been extended. While the changes are impressive there are a number of niggles which may concern the jury members. For starters the weight saving only applies to the 7.5-tonner and even then it's not the lightest in the sector: while the right-hooker cab is a noisy place to work.
Verdict This is a strong candidate. Notwithstanding a few niggling issues, we'll be surprised if the MAN doesn't break the tape first.
