It's not only the engine and gearbox engineers who've been busy at Scania -the boffins behind the firm's fleet management products have been upgrading their wares with a full range of business tools that go beyond simple vehicle data gathering to integrate everything from satellite navigation and tracking to order and delivery management.
Having moved on from the earlier systems that interfaced with the driver through a Pocket PC device, there is now a range of displays that run on much targer screens the 10.4in lnteractor 500 and 600 and a new 6,3in lnteractor 300 all operating on the full Windows platform. There's also Scania Communicator, which provides passive vehicle monitoring from base without any active communication with the driver_
The range of different hardware makes Scania's system suitable for operation in multi-marque fleets.
A key development is the introduction of GPRS communication, which is significantly quicker than GSM and is charged by data volume rather than time. However, as GPRS coverage is still developing, GSM-based text messaging is kept in reserve. The GPRS is a pan-European system, which is charged at a fixed rate via Scania's own-brand SIM cards, backed by Vodaphone.
New functions include Order Support, designed to be integrated into common traffic office management products to provide real-time delivery status information. Driver Log offers similar integration into driver management systems.
With the Windows XP operating system operators can run their own software in-cab, as well as using the in-built internet and email functions. Other features can include navigation, DVD and TV playback and vehicle safety cameras.
