As logistics manager Nick Matthews is responsible for a fleet of 79 vehicles: their main job is supplying scaffolding. He is convinced that with proper auditing processes it's possible for any haulage company to miniMse the risks of a corporate manslaughter charge.
One question that crops up is how the MD can keep tabs on everything happening at the bottom of the command chainsuch as drivers' safety checks.
Matthews says: "The MD should do this through getting involved in approving policies and procedures and then checking that they are actually happening by way of regular audits. "Companies should also have non-compliance procedures to address any failures and the MD should ensure he or she is made aware of any non-compliance Issues."
