Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE VIEW that there is an HGV driver shortage in Britain is all nonsense, I am rapidly coming to believe.

The only shortage in Britain is a lack of decent employers in the haulage industry.

In the area in which I live, Sussex, the pay for an HGV Driver is about £6.50p per hourhardly a fortune is it?

They also expect a driver to work 60 hours a week and to load and unload the vehicle.

I am 50 years old, I have an HGV driving licence, yet cannot get a job.

At an interview, if lam lucky enough to get one, the employers always come up with the same old question-how much experience do you have? Which is the classic problem no experience, can't get a job, can't get experience... and soon.

The other choice is to work for an agency, but it's a choice I'd rather not make. It seems that, at best, the hours are irregular and then you're not guaranteed a full week's work.

I have also heard of agencies lying to drivers about pay and working conditionshardly rumours to fill you with trust about the industry.

People just cannot afford to be messed around like this, when they have family commitments and bills to pay Ian Hunt By e-mail
