The North Western Traffic area was forced to admit to a computer error at a recent public

inquiry. Mike Jewell reports.

OFFICIALS AT the North Western traffic area office have been left red-faced after a computer glitch led to an operator being told that its licence had ended.

The revelation came at a Golborne public inquiry where Skelmersdale-based Ken Abram Ltd was facing action over breaches of the drivers' hours rules, maintenance, and consideration of its repute. The inquiry had previously been adjourned to allow boss Ken Abram to attend.

According toTC Beverley Bell's records the company no longer had an 0-licence as a renewal fee had been paid late. However, after a short adjournment. Bell admitted further enquiries had revealed a computer error in the system. The payment had been received on 10 August and consequently. the licence did not terminate. Outlining a number of drivers' hours and tachograph breaches, traffic examiner Neil Vosper said he felt that the offending was due to ignorance of the regulations on the part of the drivers. However, just 1.14% of the more than 4,000 tachograph charts examined were found to contain errors.

Operations and transport manager Ronald Cheetham said the tachograph charts were sent for outside analysis with infringements being drawn to the drivers' attention. He had previously dismissed drivers for drivers' hours offences and speeding.

KenAbram said he would never allow anyone to cut corners. He was aware that he had taken more of a figurehead role at the company and said it had been a mistake to remain on the licence as a transport manager. The firm was seeking to reduce authorisation to a more manageable 70 vehicles and 100 trailers. voluntarily the licence Cutting the licence to 70 vehicles and 1(X) trailers, the TC said that she regarded it as a serious ease as there had been a catalogue of problems.

However, she was satisfied that the company had taken action, albeit late in the day.
