Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The traffic thrombosis on the Al south of Peterborough is causing such major delays to lorries that haulage rates could soon be affected.

East Anglia Roads To Prosperity (EARP) and the Road Haulage Association warn that conditions between Alconbury and Fletton Parkway near Peterborough are already critical.

At present 45,000 vehicles per day (vpd) use the road. This flow is expected to swell to at least 63,000vpd by the year 2000; 100,000 if the recent rate of growth continues. The maximum capacity of a dual-carriageway is 46,000vpd.

"The whole road is a nightmare for lorry drivers," says RHA district manager Chris Wright. "We feel that urgent action must be taken. Otherwise the economy of north and south Cambridgeshire could literally grind to a halt."
