• Next month's Transport and Distribution Services Show will see the launch of the first British-developed in-cab computer for trucks.
The computer, developed by Lucas Kienzle, displays information to the driver through a special optical port. By linking the computer to a tachograph output, like Lucas Kienzle's 1318, the unit can provide the driver with information such as the total driving time since last rest, accumulated reckonable rest time and the odometer reading.
When linked to sensors fitted around the vehicle the computer can be used to provide other information like adverse load conditions, engine pressures and temperatures.
Lucas Kienzle has developed an infra-red transmission system which allows the details held within the in-cab computer to be transferred to a base computer when the vehicle returns to its depot This design feature saves any physical transfer of information, which is currently necessary with other in-cab computers on the market.
Lucas Kienzle claims the new system will warn drivers of possible hours violations, reduce wear and tear on the vehicle and minimise paperwork.
Information about the cost of the unit and when it will be available for purchase will be announced at the show.
