• As the postal strike began to peter out last week, one of the biggest private carriers, Interlink, announced a 23% rise in profits to £5.8 million for the full year to 30 June.
The company, begun by bike courier entrepreneur Richard Gabriel 10 years ago, says it has won up to £200,000 extra revenue from the postal dispute, and aims to keep 40% of its new customers.
It plans to expand. A Hartlebury hub with a new sorting system will open in autumn, which it claims will quadruple capacity in the UK. It begins an overnight parcel service in West Germany from May. Datamail, a small parcels service designed to compete with the Post Office's Datapost, starts in October.
