ENVIRONMENTAL, traffic and safety problems are resulting from the rise in coach traffic in London, according to Greater London council's transport committee chair Dave Wetzel.
He feels that coaches do not pay for terminal facilities or for road space as they have "very low road tax" and that their low costs are obtained at the expense of others.
He is also accusing coaches of duplicating and unfairly undermining existing rail services with the resultant under-use of existing publicly funded resources.
He proposes an independent assessment of what he sees as the public interest and fair competition and that coach operators should pay a levy for the provision and use of stopping places.
He has met Transport Minister Lynda Chalker to press for action to cope with increased coach operations resulting from the 1980 Transport Act and the current tourist boom.
