SUGGESTIONS that traffic could be diverted to the projected M20 and M26 from the proposed M25 have been rejected "unrealistic" by the Freight Transport Association.
Giving evidence at a public inquiry into the building of the Swanley to Sevenoaks section of the road, the FTA warned that failure to complete the 119-mile road would lead to even greater congestion on A225.
"This would induce longer and unacceptable journey times, high accident potential and unacceptable intrusion for those who populate the existing route between Sevenoaks and the Dartford Tunnel."
It also told planning inspector G. L. Dobry that any further slippage of target dates on the road would result in severe cost to the South-East in both economic and environmental terms.
Failure to complete the road would lead to heavy pressure on other roads in the area if some sections of the road were built and the link roads were not, said the FTA.
