We read with interest Alan Millar's article -Better to plan than travel hopefully" (CM, August 25). How heartily we concur with what he says!
Mr Millar points out that good vehicle utilisation is even more important now, as the implications of EEC regulation 543/69 become more apparent. EEC regulation 1463/70 (not yet fully implemented in the UK) calls for hgv of 31/2 tonnes gvw and over, and
most passenger-carrying vehicles, to fit and use tachographs.
The purpose of the tachograph is to enable the authorities to enforce drivers' hours regulations effectively. A secondary benefit is that they provide valuable management information for route planning. In parti.cular, the recordings on the tachograph chart pinpoint traffic holdups.
In a number of fleets, tachographs are being used on a voluntary basis with the agreement of management and drivers. The management obtains valuable information about vehicle utilisation and is also able to monitor selffinancing productivity deals which benefit the drivers.
