It was with considerable interest that I read the Bird's-Eye View reference to Mr Peter Privett and his success as Lorry Driver of the Year (CM, September 8).

Well do I remember this, having been actively involved on the local committee since the inception of the Lorry Driver of the Year contest by the then Transport Road Traders Association (TRTA) some 25 years ago, and could not let the occasion pass without comment on the other stalwarts who, by their diligence and attention to detail, formed a very active work force.

I am personally known to Mr Peter Privett, Mr Bernard Hale and Mr Basil Miller, and from memory only Sergeant Hale was on the original committee, which held meetings at the local brewery in the board room, by kind courtesy of Mr Peter Dupree (now Sir Peter), who was also a committee member. Among the other members whose names I recall were Josh Hodges, Tommy Thompson, Doug Griffiths, and I think Sergeant Vaiser also helped.

This committee on the day was ably supplied by Tapley with meters for brake testing, REME and Gas Board workshop staff for inspections, Southsea Motor Club for marshals and police cadets as runners. Testing venues were Hilsea Barracks, Victoria Barracks, Gas Board Premises, Royal Marine Barracks, RCT barracks, Borden, and currently at RN barracks, Gosport.

There are not many of the -old gangleft but I have fond and vivid memories of great team work which made our local efforts such a success.
