• The new York Lo-Deck platform semi-trailer has a shallow frame design that enables ISO container-carrying versions and 10/12-metre types fitted with York T1R tilt superstructure to operate within the European 4-metre overall height restriction, despite the use of standard tyre equipment and running at normal fifth-wheel coupling heights.
The range comprises single-axle units plated to 13 tons gross trailer weight for operation up to 16 tons gcw, and tandem-axle versions plated up to 29.5 tons gross trailer weight for operation up to 34 tons gcw. The Lo-Deck complements the Teamster and M series platform model ranges.
To achieve the lower platform height, the company uses fabricated solid Lsection high-tensile-steel main-members, instead of the castellated design usually identified with York.
Main-members, 17in.-deep by 5.5in.wide, are common to the model range and the swan-neck depth above the kingpin is only 8in. This gives the TIR model an additional 53 cu ft of capacity over previous frame designs.
Increasing the thickness of the deck material and a change to I-section floor cross-bearers, has allowed York to widen cross-bearer spacing from I2in. to 24in. without detriment to floor point loading strength. Large diameter tubular cross
members provide main-frame torsional strength.
A new double-fold side-rave design, which incorporates a rubbing rail, provides 8ft 2.5in. of usable platform width; an optional rave with chock gives an 8ft 0.5in. platform width.
To complete the construction, the more vulnerable steel components, notably the cross-bearers, are treated with the Alchem anti-corrosion process, the main-members being shot-blasted and coated with anti-corrosive primer.
York singleand tandem-axle running gear is used on the Lo-Deck models and' bogie axle spreads conform to the latest UK Construction and Use Regulations.
The trailer is easily identified from the rear because of the redesigned layout. The bumper features a 4in. by 2in. bottom bar mounted for optimum horizontal impact strength. The rear lamp clusters are recessed ahead of the bumper and mounted on a pair of outrigger brackets. Stays between the lamp brackets and bottom bumper bar carry the twin Long Vehicle markers.
Push-pull two-speed landing gear is fitted on Lo-Deck models rated at 24 tons gcw and above. The gear (CM August 25) features a single winding shaft and a captive handle.
Lo-deck platform models are listed in lengths from 8 to 12 metres in increments of 0.5m, with the addition of a 40ft model.
