• That overloading of foreign lorries is not as prevalent as was at first believed is the pattern which is emerging from DoE checks made during the period of grace granted to foreign operators after the commencement of the Road Traffic (Foreign Vehicles) Act 1972 on July 31.
The DoE has been weighing vehicles entering the United Kingdom at certain south coast ports, using the portable weighbridge equipment supplied by Weighwrite Ltd. Overweight vehicles have been noted and the drivers given a warning letter in 10 languages. Full application of the provisions of the Act will begin later this month.
Contrary to expectations, only 30 per cent of vehicles are proving overweight in gross, and overloading of axles is very small. The preponderance of offences now relates to lack of drivers' records.
