• Motor Panels (Coventry) Ltd, currently supplying cabs to ERF, Foden, Guy, Scammell and Seddon, is exhibiting a "next-generation" cab at Earls Court. The cab, which is an all-steel full-width 2.5-metre design, is intended for transcontinental operations, but less luxuriously trimmed versions would suit lighter vehicles. A Motor Panels spokesman made it clear to CM that the design has resulted from at least two years' intensive research into such factors as the possible options to suit various chassis types, structual strength requirements in view of existing and projected European requirements, and driver comfort. A feature of the basic cab structure is that its styling can easily be altered to give different manufacturers individual looking cabs. In the same way the facia can be easily varied to suit a particular manufacturer.
Novelties on the cab, as pictured, are dimmable fluorescent interior lights mounted in the headlining, electrically controlled windows and headlamp washers.
The dash layout is quite unconventional, with all the instruments covered by a tinted acrylic cover. A lockable compartment is positioned centrally and in front of the mate is a wash-hand basin covered by a lid which matches that of the lockable compartment. Hot and cold running water is supplied by electrically operated push-button "taps", the water reservoir being located under the mate's seat.
Easy access to the two bunks at the rear of the seats is provided by the low central engine cover. Both bunk mattresses are of foam rubber to 101 millimetre thickness, in accordance with European requirements, and they are covered with an easily cleaned material. Each bunk has its own individual dim/bright light source, directional ventilation and clock, mounted on consoles on the cab rear panel. The whole of the structure is carefully sealed against draught and dust and the doors have continuous outer seals for lock and hinge protection.
