Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The parts of a Cummins NHK 180 diesel that powered an ERF 32-ton-gross two-axle tractive over a distance of nearly 500,000 miles without replacement of a major component are a feature exhibit on the company's Earls Court stand. Before stripping, the engine was tested on a dynamometer and its output exceeded its rated power of 173 bhp at 1950 rpm by about 10 per cent. Wear of the components was negligible, and it is claimed that it would have operated a further 100,000 miles before oil consumption would have become excessive.

It is notable that the engine successfully completed the stated mileage despite the fact that it was starved of oil during a period of running with the vehicle overturned, following an accident. This was at 9,000 miles and necessitated a crankshaft regrind.

The vehicle in which it was installed covered a weekly mileage of about 3000 at an average fuel consumption of 8.3 mpg. Morris's Ring Free 10W/30 lubricating oil was used throughout the operating period.
