Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lockheed, member company of the Automotive Products Group which has been involved in developing commercial vehicle disc brakes since 1960, reports that a viable system is not far off.

Some 10 years ago prototype brakes were supplied to selected manufacturers, but subsequent testing showed the pad life to be uneconomic. Since that time Lockheed has concentrated development work on improving friction material wearing characteristics and new materials have been evolved which, together with Lockheed's extensive knowledge of disc brake caliper design, are said to be proving satisfactory on test. The actuating system will be hydraulic rather than pneumatic and could easily be used with Lockheed's Antilok braking system.
