William B. Batty, 59, managing director of Ford of Britain for the past five years, has been elected to the additional role of chairman in succession to Sir Leonard Crossland who retired last week. Mr Batty joined Ford in 1930 and was among the first six entrants to the Ford Trade School at Trafford Park where he trained as a toolmaker. From the tractor group he transferred to car and truck operations as director, car and truck group in 1964, and assumed the position of md and chief executive officer in 1967. He succeeded Sir Leonard as chairman in September 1972. A similar dual appointment as chairman and md of Ford was held by Sir Patrick Hennessy in 1956. Sir Leonard succeeded Stanley Gillen as md in June 1967; and became chairman of the board in May 1968 in succession to Sir Patrick. William Hayden, 43, assistant director of manufacture, Ford of Britain, joins the board of the Ford Motor Co Ltd.

Gilbert A. Hunt, managing director and chief executive officer, Chrysler United Kingdom Ltd, presented his Lord Wakefield Gold Medal Paper to a luncheon meeting of the Institute of the Motor Industry at the Royal Automobile Club yesterday. The title of his paper was "What makes an enterprise successful?"

J. Gilbody has been promoted BRS Parcels • Ltd manager, north-western area, in succession to B. K. Bennett. S. Smith, who becomes operating manager, eastern area, based at Leicester, was previously Norwich branch manager. J. B. Roberts has been appointed area sales manager, Scottish area, based at Glasgow. • Reginald 0. Blatchford, chief engineer of Red and White Services and Jones Omnibus Services, on November 1 assumes similar responsibility for Western Welsh Omnibus Co as a further step towards joint management within the National Bus Company. He succeeds David W. Cherry who is leaving the passenger transport industry.

Alec Quayle, traffic manager of Isle of Man Road Services Ltd, retires today after 44 years' service in public transport. Harold W. Taylor, 31, has been appointed financial controller of the National Bus Company as from November 1 1972. Mr Taylor has been secretary and accountant of East Midland Motor Services Ltd, since July 1969.

B . K. Bennett has been appointed managing director, BEC (Specialised Services) Ltd, in succession to A. Monighan. Mr Bennett was previously manager, North western-area, BRS Parcels Ltd.

John Cassels, 43, an Under-Secretary in the Department for Employment, has been appointed chief executive of the Training Services Agency which was announced in the Commons during August by Secretary of State Maurice Macmillan. The TSA is to reorganize training services in the Department.

David Russell, 54, Scottish area manager of National Carriers Ltd since 1967. succeeds Harold Geoghegan, who has been appointed a director of NCL, as Midland area manager.

Desmond Fiske, 28, has been appointed marketing and sales manager of SCA (Freight) Ltd. London. Don Alexander, 33, formerly sales director for Coachwork Conversions Ltd. has been appointed manager of the new Godfrey Davis Truck Leasing Division.
