Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

That flooding is thought to be possible ir Greater London is indicated by the very considerable effort the GLC are making to raise embankment levels. It is hoped that these will prove effective. Thought must be given tc the effect flooding will have on transpor arrangements. Food supplies are entire!) reliant on road transport.

Most of the commercial vehicles and buset are so designed that the air filters would fil with water if they were to operate in 2ft o flood conditions.

We have modified our Atkinson 26-tor tippers to ensure the filters are 4ft above ground. We have flexible pipe to extend the exhaust pipe vertically. We have not solvec the braking problem which would occur if we operated in 3ft of water.

I suggest that designers of commercia vehicles would do well to consider positionin.c, air filters and exhaust pipes differently, in ordei to meet this problem.

Advice on the means of improving brakinc, must be of interest to many of your readers. CHARLES GOODWIN, Managing Director, CAG (Transport) Ltd, London SW6.
