Volvo having made news with its bus exhibits has two truck exhibits which are new and deserve attention. These are 6 x 4 and 8 x 4 tipper chassis developed especially for the British market to meet the current C and U Regulations. Both models are based on the successful F86 series and use a new double-drive bogie developed by Ailsa Truck engineers. The six-wheeler will be known from now on as the F86 6 x 4S and the eight-wheeler as the F86 8 x 4S. These model numbers are a departure from the Volvo system but are readily understandable; the S signifies Scotland.

The Ailsa bogie is a 19-ton design and has the appropriate 1.5-rnetre (4ft 11 in.) axle spread. It is a truly non-reactive design even under conditions of braking and acceleration. Two semi-elliptic springs carry the leading axle in the normal way but the rear ends of the springs are connected by extended shackles to the ends of rocking beams instead of being fixed rigidly to the chassis. The rocking beams which are heavy castings are held together with a tie bar and carried on trunnion-mounted taper roller races. The opposite arms of these beams which are shorter carry the rear axle and locate it transversely by lugs welded to it. A torque rod which runs forward from the top of the axle casing to a chassis cross-member completes the location of the rear axle.

The front axle of the 6 x 4 is plated at 6 tons so with the 19-ton bogie a one-ton loading leeway is obtained. In the same way the eight-wheeler which uses two 6-ton steering axles in conjunction with the bogie also has a one-ton loading flexibility. Both models use the TD 70C engine which devekips 192 bhp at 2400 rpm to BS AU 141a: 1971. In the future the 235 bhp TD 100 engine will be available in both models.

Two other exhibits on the stand are the popular F86 two-axle tractive unit plated for 32 tons gcw and the larger, more powerful F88 two-axle tractive unit with a sleeper cab. The F88 has the TD 100 engine which develops 235 bhp at 2200 rpm and 718 lb ft torque at 1100 rpm as standard.
