New safety features have been introduced in the 1973 range of Volkswagen commercial vehicles. The models have been fitted with wider, stronger bumpers front and rear, and an impact-absorbing box section member has been fitted behind the front bumper. Further, the indicators have been raised to a more prominent position.

These models fitted with the 1679cc twin carburetter engine will be available with automatic transmission and will be fitted with radial-ply tyres and a brake servo.

Five models are on the stand, the 1700 van fitted with the 1700 engine, the double-cab pick-up and ordinary cab pick-up, the high-roof delivery van and the 12-seater personnel carrier built on the Kombi shell by Devon Conversions Ltd. The 1700 van has a payload capacity of 2190 lb, 177 Cu ft and the high roof van has the same weight capacity but volumetric capacity is increased to 219 cu ft. The double-cab pick-up has covered space either for the storage of equipment or it can seat up to three persons. The single-cab version has the same layout as the van.

All models except the pick-ups may be supplied with the optional 1679cc engine producing 70 bhp gross at 4200 rpm SAE otherwise they are fitted with the single carburetter 1584cc engine producing 60 bhp gross at 4000 rpm, A common transmission is fitted to each vehicle: this comprises a single dry plate clutch, a four-speed synchromesh gearbox and a hypoid bevel 5.428 to 1 reduction differential unit that transmits power via drive shafts to the rear wheels.
