Scammell Lorries Ltd, To/pits Lane, Watford, Herts Scammell Lorries Ltd was founded in Watford on July 1 1922 so the 1972 Show serves to mark Scammell's 50th anniversary. Scammell is very proud of its export record and the exhibits underline this fact.

A lightweight 6 x 4 Crusader developed specially for the Australian market is one exhibit and this is shown in the colours of Express Freight Pty Ltd. In this lightweight form the Crusader is plated for 32 tons gcw although in other markets it could operate at 38 tons gcw. This special Crusader uses the same power train as the normal weight version. A two-stroke 9.3-litre VS Detroit Diesel producing 290 bhp drives through a nine-speed Fuller gearbox to double-reduction axles. Weight has been saved by dispensing the frame flitches, fitting higher crossmembers and using fabricated spring brackets instead of the usual castings: the springs themselves are also lighter owing to their lower rating.

Two-axle Crusaders are represented by Crusader 280 which is one of five ordered by Ridbridge Ltd for Continental haulage. A sleeper cab is fitted for the first time on a two-axle Crusader: it is fitted•with two bunks, heated windScreens, radio, two-way radio, full wrap-round curtains and suspension seats for both driver and passenger.

The hub reduction axle has a high 4.82 to 1 ratio which would theoretically give a top speed of 80 mph with the overdrive top gear in the Fuller box. However, an American Dana road-speed governor is fitted which limits top speed to 60 mph without restricting engine speed or power up to that speed. This arrangement enables all the power of the Rolls-Royce Eagle engine to be used for acceleration and hill climbing but restricts the engine to an economical output when running on the level.

The giant Scammell 6 x 4 Contractor prime mover on show is destined to go to Finland where it will haul heavy components for building power stations. This model has been designed to operate at up to 240 tons gcw and the prime mover alone has to carry 33 tons of ballast to provide the necessary traction. The 14-litre turbocharged sixcylinder Cummins engine delivers 380 bhp at 3210 rpm and 955 lb ft torque at 1600 rpm. The transmission consists of a Fluidrive 550 coupling and an eight-speed Leyland semi-automatic epicyclic gearbox. The rear bogie has a 40-ton design capacity and has a ratio of 15.788 to 1, Two models on show for use in the UK are a 20ft Sin, wheelbase 30 tons gvw eight-wheeler which has a Leyland 11.1-litre 0680 200 bhp engine and 32 tons gcw two-axle handyman 4 tractive unit. The show model has a Rolls-Royce Eagle 220 bhp engine which is mated to a Fuller 10-speed range gearbox.
