Frost report
DRAW, TAKE AIM, FIRE! . . and an iced-up windscreen loses its igloo look, frosted-over glass rapidly assumes a summersheen clarity. That's the object of the Speedee Polco (Pool Clock Co., 47 Neal Street, London, W.C.2) defroster gun (below).
It was demonstrated to CM this week in London when vehicle-accessories manufacturer and marketer Polco unveiled several items.
The defroster gun (35s, including icescraper; colour: pale grey) has a 10ft cable, operates off 12v, deals with interior misting, too—with a concentrated-hot-air-blower blast.
Among other equipment demonstrated:—
• Helphos 300yd-pencil-beam lamp (suction base, 7ft 6in cable, flasher unit: 6, 12 or 24v-77s 6d).
• Polco map measure (diameter: liin; wheel-based opisometer to convert inches to miles, centimetres to kilometres, etc. 17s 6d —or 19s 6d incorporating propelling pencil).
• Polco torch-battery-lit screwdriver (9i-in long, sturdy, 6s lid excluding batteries).
Test equipment
TEST EQUIPMENT now offered by E. P. Barrus (Concessionaires) Ltd., includes a compression tester, and a remote control starter switch. The tester, model CT 605, has an angled replaceable rubber cone allowing cylinder compression readings to be taken in restricted engine space. It is graduated to give accurate readings on the 2.5 in dial from 0-300 p.s.i. The rubber cone is designed to fit any size sparking plug hole.
The remote control starter switch eliminates the need to handcrank for checks such as tappets, or contact breaker points. The switch, supplied with extra long leads which are neoprene insulated, can be fitted between the starter solenoid terminals. Where no solenoid is fitted, one clip is fitted to the starter terminal and the other to earth. Made by: E. P. Barrus (Concessionaires) Ltd., 12-16 Brunel Road, Acton, London, W3.
Price: compression tester £3 15s 6d; remote control starter switch £2 5s:
Chassis lubricator
THE LATEST Airdromic chassis lubrication system announced by Tecalemit (Engineering) Ltd. does away with a flexible cable drive to the air-control unit. The control unit actuates the air motor of the lubricator and is now mounted directly on to the gearbox between the speedometer drive and its cable.
Where an electro-magnetic speedometer is fitted, the new control unit is interposed between the gearbox and the speedometer generator.
The system operates by delivering a metered quantity of lubricant to all lubricating points on the chassis at intervals and the governing factor is the distance travelled by the vehicle.
As there are six different types of standard body designs of the control unit it can be fitted direct to any normal design of gearbox speedometer drive mounting.

Remote control
A RADIO-FREQUENCY control unit for the remote control of overhead travelling cranes has been developed by Herbert Morris Ltd. It is the Morris IRC, claimed to be the first all-British system of its kind, the only commercial crane radio control offered in Britain to operate on GPO-approved frequencies, and the first to gain Factory Safety Inspectorate approval.
It enables the crane operator to enjoy complete freedom of movement within operational distances of up to 100ft from the crane. Easily installed on all new and existing overhead cranes on either a.c. or d.c., it will operate in conjunction with the conventional contactor type motor control equipment.
The system basically comprises a portable transmitter unit carried by the operator and a fixed receiver control unit and aerial mounted on the crane bridge. The transmitter, which weighs 91b including batteries, is housed in a robust glassfibre case attached to a leather harness worn by the operator inflation. It is, in effect, a portable air reservoir. When not in use it stands on its rubbei base, connected to the air supply.
The tank can be charged up to 200 p.s.i.— enough air, for example, to top up 13,5.60-12: tyres from 15-20 p.s.i., and when needed thi air meter is instantly disconnected by 2 single trigger.
It weighs under 14lb—diameter: 10.5 in— and measures 2ft to top of carrying handle which incorporates a small gauge to sham the tank pressure and indicate when the uni needs recharging.
The main tyre pressure gauge of the unii is 7in diameter and is calibrated up to 11C p.s.i.
