GaREATER payload and passenger capacities, a wider use of light flays and steel, and new applications of modern materials are the salient features of the bodywork section of this year's Commercial Motor Show. Underfloor engines and new dimensions have revolutionized passenger-body design, some of the vehicles exhibited being outstanding for original appearance and for efficient arrangement of equipment and appointments.
In the goods-body class, improved accessibility for loading, higher load factors for given dimensions and weights and greater attention to hygiene in vehicles for carrying foodstuffs are noticed.
ANTHONY Stand 5 Anthony Hoists, Ltd., Braintree Road, South Ruislip, Middx.
FjOME and export models are seen 1 on this stand, overseas needs being characterized by a Leyland Comet 5-cubic-yd. dump lorry with an all-steel body and an Anthony pipeless hydraulic hoist. A detachable steel cab shield is fitted. For use in Belgium, a Morn'sCommercial drop-sided lorry, also on show, has the Anthony magnesiumalloy hydraulic tailboard loader and steel bodywork. ith a 21-cubic-yd. steel-drop-sided body and an hydraulic hoist, and a Fordson 10-cwt, pick-up with steel bodywork by the exhibitor, complete the display.
A.P.V. Stand 34 The A.P.V. Co., Ltd., Wandsworth Park, London, S.W.18.
A LUMINIUM, largely used in the construction of a /000-gallon fourcompartment spirit tank on a Leyland Beaver 12/B.1 chassis has enabled the
constructor to keep the gross laden weight of the vehicle within the 12-ton limit for four-wheelers. The other exhibit, unhampered by British regulations, is a 4,000-litre (880-gallon) stainless-steel milk tank on a Bedford 5-ton long-wheelbase chassis. This is one of 17 such tankers, part of an order for a complete dairy, supplied by A.P.V. to Greek operators.
ARLINGTON Stand 9 Arlington Bodybuilders, Ltd, High Road, Ponders End, Middx.
LIGHT-ALLOY bodywork, in which 1-4 this exhibitor specializes, is of great value in bakers' vans. An example shown is based on a Commer 2-3-ton chassis, and is for Allied Bakeries, Ltd. The two-compartment body is framed in extruded sections, using Chobert or Tucker rivets. Sliding doors give access to the front compartment, and double doors to the rear, where there is a special locking device and a sliding step. Deep maroon and bright red are used for the major part of the body finish. Similar in construction is a Dennis Pax H forward-control long-wheelbase drop-sided lorry. The windscreen is brought round to the door pillars by curved sections. The rear panelling also has curved Perspex windows. Visibility is thus exceptional.
BEADLE Stand 18 I. C. Beadle (Coachbuilders), Ltd., Dartford.
PIONEER of light-alloy chassisless construction, this concern is exhibiting an attractive 35-seater standard Sentinel-Beadle coach with an underfloor engine.
BONALLACK Stand 16 Bonallack and Sons, Ltd., Cable Street, London, E.C.1.
PRACTICAL light bodies embodying alloy framing designed to meet the stresses of operation, are seen in three forms, On an A.E.C. chassis is mounted a 24-ft.-long platform body for brick transport, weighing less than 10 cwt. The Dekaloy flooring is laid longitudinally. A similar type of body with drop sides is seen on a Thornycroft Sturdy Star 5-6-ton chassis. Unladen weight is less than 3 tons.
On a Morris-Commercial chassis the concern exhibits a Luton van body with a capacity of 1,500 cubic ft. A steel cab designed to knock down for shipment is also displayed, together with a 6-ton biscuit container for railway use.
BROM1LOW AND EDWARDS Stand 22
Bromilow and Edwards, Ltd., Foundry Street, Bolton. INTEREST on the B. and E. stand centres on two tippers of special design. One of these is a Thornycroft Sturdy Star with a 10-ft, wheelbase, the end-tipping gear being designed to prevent body distortion on uneven ground. The rigid single ram is attached to the body by a spherical bracket about which the body pivots. Assisting it is a new type of transverse hinge-bar assembly, enabling the hinges to be secured to the underframe at its extreme width. For use where conditions are particularly arduous there is the 10-ft. 5-in. wheelbase Leyland Comet equipped with special export tipping E29
gear and a steel U-shaped body. The pressed-steel sub-frame carries an I-section track on which travel rollers actuated by the ram. whilst another pair of rollers tips the body against cams which give a progressive tipping speed.
Other exhibits include Y.6 three-way tipping gear fitted to an Albion 7-ton, 6-cubic-yd. vehicle, and Y.4 three-way gear fitted to a Bedford 5-tanner. Slant-cylinder gear of the Stability Minor type is mounted on a Dodge 123 chassis.
BRUSH Stand 89
Brush Coachwork, Ltd., Loughborough.
A DUAL-PURPOSE 43-seater single-Cl deck bus, based on the Leyland Royal Tiger chassls, and a 70-seater double-deck trolleybus based on a B.U.T. chass;S, rer resent the passenger body side of the Brush concern's activities. The single-decker is of composite construction and the trolleybus employs a comb;nation of rolled-steel and aluminium extruded sections. Methods of jointing and flitching used on the composite body are of particular interest.
Two Brush Pony battery-electric vehicles complete the exhibit, one being equipped as a mobile light-refreshment kiosk and the other as a milk float.
BURL1N G HAM Stand 90 H. V. Burnigham, Ltd., Preston New Road, Blackpool.
RENOWNED for original bodywork, this concern is exhibiting two coaches and a, double-deck bus. Particular interest attaches to the 30-seater luxury body, mounted on the A.E.C. Regal Mk. IV underfloor-engined chassis, which is equipped with a completely furnished toilet in the rear offside corner. A cocktail cabinet with a sink and ice box occupies the near-side corner. There are two sliding roofs, reclining seats and Radiomobile equipment in the body, which has marker lights externally for Continental use by the operator, Westbury Luxury Coaches, Ltd., Bristol. A similar type of vehicle seating 35 passengers is shown. It is based on a Leyland Royal Tiger chassis, overall dimensions being 30 ft. by 8 ft.
The 54-scaler double-decker on view is for Salford Transport Department, and has a straight rear staircase. Alhambrinal ceilings enliven both saloons. All the exhibits embody metal frames.
BUTTERFIELD Stand 81 W. P. Butterfield, Ltd., Shipley, Yorks.
11W0 large tankers typify the products of this long-established specialist tanker builder. A 3000gallon tanker for milk transport, with tandem 1,500-gallon compartments of 5-ft. 6-in, diameter, is based on an Atkinson chassis. The tanks are fabricated of *-in. stainless-steel sheet, polished dully internally and insulated with 2-in-thick Alfol externally. The tanks are together 22 ft. 9 ins, long, each having a 16-in, diameter raised manhole.
For beer transport an Albion tanker is exhibited, its total capacity being 2,700 gallons, or 75 barrels. Insulation in this case is ensured by 1-in. Onazote under a casing of 18-gauge aluminium.
E30 CARBOD1ES Stand 28 Carbodies, Ltd., Holyhead Road, Coventry.
IMO longer a stranger to London, the Austin taxi seen on this stand has steel bodywork with ample room for five passengers, each having excellent visibility from the six-light body. Since its introduction two years ago, this vehicle has made a valuable contribution to the export market.
Differing completely is the other exhibit on this stand, a forward-control van based on a Commer 25-cwt. chassis. Total capacity of the body is 309 cubic ft. and easy access to the interior is provided by front sliding doors and rear hinged doors.
CHURCHILL Stand 74 Churchill Constructors, Ltd., Salhouse • Road, Norwich.
PROVIDING luxury seating for 37 passengers, the coach body on the Friden chassis seen on this stand is fullfronted and has such amenities as heat-. ing from a Clayton V/25 underfloor unit feeding through ducts along the floor and outlets under the seats. Ekco" radio is also installed. Latofex cushions are used for the seats. Rather different in type is the special coach, seating 14 passengers in comfort within the limited wheelbase of 7 ft. 9 ins, provided by the Austin 25-cwt. chassis. Adequate luggage accommodation is afforded, despite the compact overall size of the vehicle.
CUNARD Stand 3 The Canard Commercial Body Building Co., Ltd, Abbeydnle Road, Wembley, Middx.
rATER1NG for commercial and private uses, the four bodies displayed by this company cover the whole gamut of commercial-vehicle appltcation. For use by schools, public institutions and works, a 12-seater body is shown mounted on the Morris-Commercial PV 15-20-cwt. forward-control chassis. Double seats in four rows on
the off side, and four single seats on the near side, are filled with Dunlopillo.
The utility body on the Morris Cowley chassis will seat seven passengers or carry 10 cwt. of goods with the seats folded down to form a firm platform. Ash framing and' oak-faced plywood panelling finished in natural graining afford a pleasing external appearance. Designed to meet the needs of housing estates and outlying districts is a mobile shop, mounted on a Morris-. Commercial PV 15-20-cwt. chassis. It is shown fitted as a butcher's shop On the longer Morris-Commercial , 25-30-cwt. chassis is seen a gown-van body with an interior height of
5 ft. 9 ins. .
DUPLE Stand 36 Duple Motor Bodies, Ltd., The Hyde, Hendon, London, MW.9. •
THE 18-year-old association between. this company and Vauxhall Motors,. Ltd., is continued in revisedform in the. Big Bedford-Duple .service 1314S .dNplayed. Seating 33 passengers in a full-fromed body with curved, glazed panels in the front corners, this roomy vehicle is particularly clean in appear
ance. Steel pillars, truss panels and bearers are used, easy maintenance. having been a prime consideration in the design. Air intakes situated in the front dome, feed clean air to grilles in the body sides.
Another outstanding exhibit is the Roadmaster luxury coach based on the Leyland Royal Tiger chassis. " Angular lines are unusual on a vehicle of this size, but prove attractive as well as practical, enabling 41 passengers to be accommodated in individual seats. The forward-hinging front door is interesting, being a simple design, but giving flush lines in the closed position and ample entry spact when open.
Another vehicle to the-new maximum dimensions is the full-height 57-seater double-decker based on the Guy Arab chassis. • Individual-beram lamps are fitted .'for -each lower-deck passenger.
DUN AMIN Stand 6 Duramin Engineering Co., Ltd.,
Standard Road, London, N.W.10. THREE types of goods body employ' ing duralumin, and a container suitable for road, rail or sea journeys, are featured. A boxvan body, 24 ft. 6 ins. long. 6 ft_ 9 ins, high and 6 ft. 9 ins wide, is shown on an A.E.C. Mammoth Major III chassis. Like the platform body shown on the Albion Chieftain chassis, the flooring is of Duraplank extruded duralumin sections. The van body weighs 24 cwt. and the platform body 6 cwt.
On a Thornycroft Sturdy Star chassis is fitted a drop-sided body 16 ft. long, with sides 18 ins, high, weighing 71 cwt. The unladen weight of both the Albion and the Thornycroft is under 3 tons. All the exhibits have duralumin cabs.
DUTFI ELD Stand 75 Outfield Motors, Ltd., 113, Caversham Road, Reading, Berks.
HOME-MARKET needs are met by two vehicles. On a Tillings-Stevens K6MA7 chassis is a full-fronted medium-weight coach body seating 33 passengers. Sliding roofs, radio. thorough 'heating arrangements and hammock seats are included in the appointments. A drop-sided body with detachable corner posts and pillars is mounted on a Vulcan 6PF chassis with a wheelbase of 13 ft.
EAGLE Stand 63
The Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick.
DUBUC works are provided for in
die Eagle display. An A.E.C. Mammoth Major six-wheeled chassis is employed for a heavy-duty dump vehicle of l0-ton capacity with a particularly robust body capable of withstanding the stresses of loading by mechanical excavators. The floor is of laminated construction, having double steel plates between which are sandwiched 2-in, oak boards. Twin-ram hydraulic tipping gear is fitted.
Intended for the maintenance of overhead wires, the Eagle three-stage tower is mounted on a Guy Wolf chassis.

EAST LANCASIIIRE Stand 14 East Lancashire Coach Builders, Ltd., Whalley New Road Works, Blackburn. A LOW-HEIGHT 51-seater doubleI—I deck body mounted on a Dennis Lance K3 chassis is seen here. It is for service with the Aldershot and District Traction Co., Ltd., and finished in the operator's standard colours. The vehicle is 26 ft. long and 7 ft. 6 ins, wide, and equipment includes a Clayton L6A heater, On a Guy Arab chassis is shown a full-height doable-deck body accommodating 57 passengers. Dimensions in this case are 27 ft, and 8 ft. Both bodies have steel frames.
EDWARDS BROS. Stand 21
Edwards Bros. (Tippers), Ltd., 264, Goldhawk Road, London, W.12.
ONCE again the Edwards Bros. stand contains six tipping vehicles, with a variety of body types. A Commer
64-7-ton forward-control chassis is fitted with EH2 slant-type tipping gear with combined ram and lank assembly. The body is a wooden, steel-lined structure. An Austin Loadstar 5-ton long-wheelbase end-tipper has a flitch-plated chassis with 3EL twin ram gear and a wooden steel-lined body.
The Dennis Centaur end-tipper displayed has 2T twin ram gear and a steel pretabricated body weighing 16 cwt. A similar body is fitted to an Albion Chieftain chassis equipped with the same type of tipping gear. This vehicle, however, has an Edbro ail-steel cab with a double-skinned roof which can be knocked down for export. This cab is also fitted to a Maudslay Mogul end-tipper with 3T gear and a composite body, and to Vulcan front-singleram end-tipper with 2EL gear. A patent, six-cylindered swash-plate, combined power-take-off and pump unit is fitted to all the exhibits.
EXPRESS Stand 91
Express Motor and Body Works, Ltd., 150, Goswell Road, London, E.C.1. TRANSPORT for potato crisps is 1 provided in the Albion van shown here. An internal capacity of 1,000 cubic ft. is supplemented by a weldedsteel roof rack 104 ins, high carrying display boards. An illuminated glass display panel is mounted above the cab. Access to the body is through side and rear doors, and the vehicle is finished in the silver, blue, gold and black livery of the operator, Smith's Potato Crisps, Ltd.
A Commer 3-4-ton chassis is displayed, fitted with a van body having light-alloy framework and bearers. Stressed structural members are either bolted with lock nuts or riveted with solid aluminium-alloy rivets. At the rear the drop tailboard is used in conjunction with an aluminium roller shutter attached to the rear half of the roof, and this section, complete with the shutter, slides into the front of the roof to permit overhead loading. The vehicle is for the British Aluminium Co., Ltd.
GARNER Stand 35 Garner Motors, Ltd., North Acton Road, London, N.W.I0.
A LL-STEEL framework is used in bodies built by this concern, the largest example shown being based on a Fordson Thames 5-ton 13-ft. 1-in.wheelbase chassis. This body has a cubic capacity of 500 cubic ft. and has flush-fitting sliding doors and a sliding shutter. Two bodies are exhibited on Fordson 10-cwt. chassis, both with a capacity of 130 cubic ft. One of these is intended for the carriage of confectionery, and both are fitted with sliding doors and shutters,
GURNEY NUTTING Stand 49 Gurney Nutting, Ltd., Lombard Road, London, S.W.19.
V-TYPE front panelling is an unusual but attractive style for coaches, and is seen on the 37-seater luxury body on the Maudslay Marathon chassis. Interior appointments include dual A.V.111. heaters, one in the front bulkhead and one under the floor of the
rear of the body, apart from a smaller unit in the driver's cab, Radiomobile with volume control to each speaker, and Lintafoam sponge-rubber seat fillings. On a Dennis Lancet chassis, the bodybidder has mounted a 37seater ' coach body equipped with fluorescent lighting, radio and dual heaters. Both vehicles have rear luggage lockers, with further luggage accommodation at the body sides.
HARRINGTON Stand 99 Thomas Harrington, Ltd., Old Shoreham Road, Hove.
r0 underfloor-engined and one cronventional chassis have been selected by Harrington to display its skill. On the Leyland Royal Tiger chassis is mounted a 40-seater body with a double floor, giving 136 cubic ft. of luggage accommodation. Ventilation specially developed to prevent dust infiltrating into the rear locket is used, and the heating plant draws fresh air from an intake at waist level. A vacuum-actuated central entrance door is fitted.
A similar type of body, seating 41 passengers is fitted on an A.E.C. Regal Mk. IV chassis, this vehicle having twin sliding roofs, Perspex front and rear dome panels, radio and 63 cubic ft. of luggage accommodation. The con. ventional type of vehicle is the Foden observation coach, with a front entrance, 37 seats, single sliding roof and Perspex roof panels at front and rear. All these vehicles have the distinctive Harrington fin.
HOOPER Stand 15 Hooper and Co. (Coachbuilders), Ltd., Western Avenue, London, W.3.
ANEWCOMER to the ranks of commercial-vehicle bodybuilders, this concern has the distinction of being a private-car bodybuilder to H.M. The King. Quite diflereni„ therefore. from earlier products are the vehicles exhibited, comprising van bodes on Morris-Commercial, Karrier Bantam and Fordson 10-cwt. chassis.
The Morris-Commercial, finished in pale blue and white for T. Wall and Sons, Ltd., has a serving hatch on the near-side rear doors, insulated icecream containers and washing facilities. The Karrier Bantam has a Luton body with a capacity of 400 cubic ft. A tailboard and roller shutter are fitted at the rear. The construction of this body, like that of the Fordson, which has a capacity of 130 cubic ft., consists of ash and hardwood framing with Plymax sides and aluminium roof and quarters.
JENNINGS Stand 24 J. H. Jennings and Sons, Ltd., Sand bach.
DROOF that vehicles for the trans
port of animals can be good-looking is regularly provided by this company. On show are a de luxe horse box on the Bedford passenger vehicle chassis, each stall having double floors with plywood sides, the upper surfaces padded and covered with leather and the lower surfaces having kicking pads. Metal mangers and saddle racks are also found in each stall. A lift, off container-type cattle truck is shown on a Dodge 5-ton chassis and is lined internally to half height with aluminium. Sides are hinged and divided, the upper deck having a runup and div.ding gates.
A mobile canteen is based on an Austin 25-cwt. chassis, extended and fitted with a hinged canopy and counter on the near side, and with a rear entrance. The clerestory roof ensures ample illumination for the wellequipped interior.
KENNINGS Stand 95 Kennings, Ltd., Leadmill Road, Sheffield, 1.
SOMETHING for everybody would describe Stand 95, on which the largest vehicle is a travelling office mounted on a Tasker trailer chassis.
Within an overall length of 22 ft. 6 ins. are contained an entrance vestibule with counter, a general office, a private office with 'desk, fitted toilet and water supply. Calor-gas heating and fluorescent lighting complete the furnishings.
Slightly shorter with an overall length of 20 ft. 6 ins., is a Morris-Commercial long-wheelbase 5-ton mobile fish-andchip shop. Sliding doors on the near side of the body lead to the counter behind which are a stainless-steel sink, a cooking range and food storage space. On a Morris-Commercial J-type chassis is mounted an ice-cream shop, service being over counters under windows on each side of the body. An adaptable ambulance is also shown on a MorrisCommercial ambulance chassis,
K1NGSLAND Stand 110 Kingslaisd and Sons, Ltd., 246, Brondey Road, London, S.E.6.
HARDWOOD framing panelled in aluminium-faced plywood forms the basis of the Kingsland bodies. One is a 1,445-cubic-ft. pantechnicon on a Guy Vixen chassis with a 14-ft. 9-in. wheelbase. Rigidity is the special feature of the body.
P.36 On a Guy Wolf chassis with a wheelbase of 13 ft. is mounted a bakery and confectionery body, in which hygiene has been particularly studied. It has two compartments with two doors on the near side, one on the off side, and double doors at the rear. A false floor and dustproof wheel-boxes are noteworthy details.
LAWTON-GOODMAN Stand 47
Lawton-Goodman, Ltd., Slade Works, London, N.W.2. TRAILER kiosks towed by light vans or cars have become popular in recent years, and three examples are seen on this stand. The bodybuilder has succeeded in showing some of the various possible applications. One kiosk the Kingsbury, is fitted for ice
cream and other refreshment sales, and has large windows on each side, with a folding blind. The Sheldon kiosk is equipped as a mobile kitchen and has double serving hatches and a sink. The Hendon lightweight trailer is partially equipped for use as a mobile shop, firstaid post or office.
LOMAS Stand 29 Herbert Lomas, Ltd., 32, City Road, Manchester, 15.
A MBULANCE bodies have been the W1 special field of this concern for many years, and the example shown is typical. Based on a Bedford ambulance chassis, it is known as the B type, and has a side-by-side interior equipment. This is adaptable to take four 'recumbent patients, if necessary.
MANN EGERTON Stand 1 Mann Egerton and Co., Ltd., 5, Prince of Wales Road, Norwich.
REE luxury coaches and a double1 deck bus form the Mann Egerton exhibit. A Maudslay Marathon Mk. III
coach, seating 32 passengers in a 30-ft. by 8-ft. body, is interesting because of the provision at the rear of a full-Iength double wardrobe to accommodate coats and hats. It has hinged doors giving access to the interior of the rear luggage locker.
On this model and on a Dennis Lancet 37-seater coach, also shown, Radiomobile Personal equipment is fitted, with individual loudspeakers in the headrolls of the seats. Individual on-off and volume-control switches are provided. Both vehicles have Clayton heating equipment.
The lighter type of vehicle is represented by an Austin 32-seater, fullfronted coach, which, like the others built by the concern, employs a framework largely of steel with some hardwood members, panelled internally and externally in aluminium. The doubledecker is a full-height type, with seats for 56 passengers, based on the Daimler CVD 6 chassis. All-steel construction is employed in the body, which is 8 ft. wide.
MARSHALLS Stand 109 Marshalls Motor Bodies, Ltd., The Aerodrome, Cambridge.
THE products of this concern are for home and export markets. Particularly interesting is the 10-seater personnel carrier with an all-steel body mounted on an Austin 25-cwt. chassis. The body is double-skinned throughout and the roof is insulated with Isoflex.
A maximum of 16 passengers can be seated when luggage is not carried.
With overall dimensions of 24 ft. 6 ins., 7 ft:6 ins., and 10 ft. 2 ins., the mobile library shown is based on a Bedford passenger chassis. It has a clerestory roof, fluorescent lighting and a wardrobe. A boxvan body integral with the cab is mounted on an Austin Loadstar chassis. Side panels of Flexometal are secured to the ash framing with aircraft glue. The steel roof, which has a fabric central insert, is re-inforced to carry a rack, folding steps being fitted in the rear near-side pillar to give access to the rack.
MARTIN WALTER Stand 79 Martin Walter, Ltd., Cheriton Road, Folkestone.
HAVING given the word Utilecon to the world, and introduced a new type of dual-purpose vehicle to the British market at least, Martin Walter, Ltd., now presents the Utilabus. This is a 9-10-seater utility-cum-goods vehicle based on the Morris J-type chassis, in which the seats fold against the body sides when goods are carried. Equally new is the Morris Cowley -Utilecon, wherein comfortable seats for five passengers can be folded into the floor to permit the carriage of goods. Similar Utilecon bodies are shown on the Bedford 1(1-12-cwt. and the Fordson 4-5-cwt. chassis.

TWO Daimler double-deckers for English municipal authorities and a Leyland/MCW Olympic single-decker for a South America one, are seen here. The single-decker seats 40 and is painted in the silver and red livery of the Montevideo undertaking. Both doubledeckers are of metal construction, employing tubular steel pillars and steel truss panels. One is 26 ft. long, 7 ft. 11 ins, wide and seats 58 passengers, and the other is 25 ft. 11 ins. long, 7 ft. 5 ins, wide and seats 54 passengers. his one has the new frontal treatment specified by Birmingham Transport Department, by which the bus has been ordered.
MULLINERS Stand 82 Mulliners, Ltd.. Bordesley Green Road, Birmingham, 8.
GOODS and passenger vehicles are seen on this stand, the latterclass being represented by a Morris-Commercial 32-seater single-deck bus. A hydraulically operated front entrance door is provided. The bus is intended for one-man operation and has no interior bulkhead. The goods vehicles are Standard Vanguard van and pickup models. with steel bodywork.
NEVILLE Stand 48 G. E. Neville and Son, Ltd., Mansfield, Notts.
SEEING being believing, the exhibitor has in this case provided one of its show models with actuating mechanism, so that demonstrations of the Neville patent divided cab may be seen continuously. The cab is designed to hinge forward after the removal of a few holding-down bolts, thus giving exceptional accessibility to the engine. Power for the comprehensive equipment carried is provided by a 15-kVA 220230-volt generator driven by an oil engine. Additional standing space can be provided for workmen by dropping the folding body sides and raising the folding canopies,
A mobile shop based on a Karrier CK3 chassis is equally well equipped on a smaller scale, the body having 44 sq. ft. of glazing in the roof, curved Perspex roof panels and Normand patent slatted rolling doors. Four tiers of shelves occupy the body sides, and there is a counter at the rear and a washbasin below the counter.
For goods carriage there is a lightweight van based on a Guy Vixen forward-control chassis with an unladen weight of under 3 tons.

rONTRASTING types of double
decker are shown. Particularly interesting is the express-service 44seater based on a Leyland P.D.2 chassis, for Southdown Motor Services,. Ltd. This has a full-fronted body, an enclosed rear platform and adjustable, tubular luggage carriers from floor to ceiling over the wheel-arches. To complete the coach" specification, translucent Perspex panels are fitted in the sides of the roof, and the seats have head rolls and wide cushions.
The other exhibit is a Guy Arab 56 seater doubledecker, which, by means of an unusual pillar design, has only two wide windows on each side of the lower deck,-and three in the upper saloon. Both bodies are steel framed and have the patent twin ventilating system giving a complete change of air at a controlled rate in both saloons.

QPECIALIZING in ambulance con1,-)struction, this bodybuilder is exhibiting the Premier-type ambulance, based on a Commer Q2 chassis. Improved
inter-panel . ventilation, illuminated ambulance signs front and rear, and a wash basin are features of the vehicle, which has accommodation for one stretcher case and five sitting cases and may be adapted to take four stretchers on two-tier gear. All-up weight of the vehicle is under 3 tons.

TilREE types of tipping body are displayed, as well as five kinds of tipping gear. Hydraulic operation is employed in each case, twin underbody sloping rams being used in the Seddon 6-cubic-yd. end-tipper. On a Foden FE 6/7 chassis is fitted a special panelled end-tipping body with a steel shutter in a tailboard whereby lime can be unloaded on a narrow elevator belt. In this case 1.12 gear is used. The third
vehicle on the stand, a Guy Vixen, has horizontal gear with a sub-frame for even distribution of the tipping stresses.

EM PLOYING a B.T.C. two-wheeled La chassis, the only vehicle displayed on this stand is a stores caravan. Like other products of the concern, the prefabrication principle is a feature of the construction. Built up of eight main sections, the framing is steel, as are interior and exterior panels. The roof is insulated. Two windows at each side and one in the front of the body are in addition to other windows covered with fly-proof gauze. Collapsible canvas awnings supported by tubular framing completes the equipment.
REYNOLDS Stand 4 W. J. Reynolds (Motors), Ltd., New Road, Dagenham. A N interesting special-purpose vehicle
is the oilfield outfit exhibited by this concern. Based on a Fordson Sussex six-wheeled chassis, the vehicle is designed for overseas use. Equipment includes a power-driven winch, a heavyduty tail roller, gin poles and a front bolster, and either overhead or rear-end loading is possible. The winch has a capacity of 25,000 lb., and the vehicle is complete with the overhead jib.

FITTED with detachable slatted racks for carrying loaves of bread in two compartments entered either from the rear or the side, the van body on the Commer 2-ton chassis is practical but smart. External panelling is in aluminium, extended to cover the chassis frame. This same technique is seen on a Karrier Bantam 2-ton chassis, also fitted with a boavan body, but panelled in aluminium-faced plywood.

Charles H. Roe, Ltd., Crossgates Carriage Works, Leeds. QEATING capacities varying frorn 40 to 70 are provided in the three Roe
exhibits. The smallest vehicle is a single-deck bus based on the A.E.C. Regal Mk. IV chassis with an aluminium-alloy main framework and a steel-rein'orced underframe. The front entrance is operated by Peters gear.
Next largest is a 56-seater doubledecker on a Crossley chassis and finished in the new green colour scheme of Leeds Corporation. The framework in this case is of teak, and the patent staircase has two passing platforms and coathanging accommodation below it. Employing the same structural features is the 70-seater double-deck trolleybus body on a Sunbeam MS2 chassis.

facture and•shipbuilding makes this concern eminently well suited to the work of body construction. The Rivaloy service-bus body on the Commer Avenger chassis is original both in design and in appearance. SCAMMELL AND NEPHEW
Stand 98 Scannell and Nephew, Ltd., Fashion Street, London, E.1. nNE of the three models on this 14-1 stand is a joint effort of the bodybuilder and its associated concern, Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., which built the semi-trailer chassis on which is mounted the large pantechnicon body for Montague Burton, Ltd.
Another body designed to carry clothing is the Luton van on a Fordson 3-ton chassis, which has been extended for this function. Light-alloy Construction keeps down body weight, the framing consisting of extruded members specially designed to withstand the unusual stress distribution occasioned by the method of carrying the load.
Hardwood framing is employed in the boxvan body on the Commer 25cwt. chassis.
SPARSHATTS Stand 108 J. H. Sparshatt and Sons, Ltd., London Road, Portsmouth.
DENN1S and Dodge provide the power for the Sparshatts' exhibits. On a Dennis Pax 5-ton normal-control chassis is mounted a drop-sided brewer's body incorporating the bodybuilder's light-alloy tubular structure. A Dennis Horla tractor draws a mobile refreshment bar on a semitrailer chassis. with a Scammell coupling. Beer may be served from one side of the vehicle and tea from the other, whilst the specification includes an insulated cold room and a galley with hot and cold water.
A Dodge 2-3-ton chassis is the basis of an Onazote-insulated refrigerated vehicle employing Lightfoot refrigeration equipment.
SPENBOROUGH Stand 27
Spenborough Engineering Co., Ltd., Union Road, Heckmondwike, Yorks. rOMPLETE vehicles on this -stand, %—fitted with the exhibitor's tipping gear, are surrounded by components, pumps, power take-offs and valves. Moreover, the two vehicles are working models, one being a Commer QX7 with UP1 91 underbody twin-ram endtipping gear, a type introduced only a
little over a year ago. The tailboard used on the 12-ft.-long body facilitates the .discharge of coal into bunkers. Threeway tipping is seen on a Dodge 123 chassis, having a single telescopic ram.
,SPURL1NG Stand 12 Spurling Motor Bodies Ltd., The Hyde, London, N.W.9.
VARIETY is a characteristic of the Spurling exhibits, which include a sitting-case ambulance based on a Bedford chassis. The bodywork is allsteel and has accommodation for one recumbent and five sitting patients, or nine sitting cases. Similar in appearance is the all-metal Bedford 30-cwt. van, recently introduced by the concern. A Bedford 5-ton chassis displayed, has a composite body for use by dyers and cleaners, and is fitted with a rear loading well, closed by a roller shutter. Tubular carrying rails run across the full width of the body and there are vertical lashing rails. A BedfordScammell is the remaining exhibit, the semi-trailer having a full-width gantry.
STEEL BARREL Stand 96 The Steel Buret Co., Ltd., Pluenix Wharf, Uxbridge, Middx.
FOUR large tankers are accommodated on this stand, making an elephantine sight. The largest type is a two-compartment 4,000-gallon semitrailer aircraft-fuelling unit on a Carrimore chassis with tandem-bogie rear axles. Two pumps, driven by a rearmounted Ford V8 engine, provide power to deliver a total of 360 g.p.m. through two boses. Another aircraftfuelling machine is based on an Austin Loadstar chassis.. This has a capacity of 1,200 gallons_ and delivers fuel through two hoses at 70 g.p.m. each. The two-compartment tank is screened by valances in which are roller shutters providing access to the pump, hose reels, water sight glasses, etc. Two of the tankers have capacities of 1,800 gallons each. One of these incorporates an A.E.C. Monarch Mk. III chassis and has three compartments. The other, based on the new Bedford SL chassis, is for petrol, oil or kerosene delivery.

BOTH full-fronted and half-cab designs find a place on this stand. The second type is represented by a 38-seater coach or bus based on the Dennis Lancet chassis with the new maximum dimensions. The other, a coach based on the Crossley chassis, has a full front, central, eritrance, and radio and heating installations. Rather more unusual is the full-fronted 57seater low-height, double-decker based on a Guy chassis. It has fold:ng doors on the rear platform.
THOMPSON BROS. Stand 13 Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd., Bilston, Staffs.
THE only chassisless aircraft-fuelling tanker in the Show is manufactured by this company, usinga Leyland engine and transmission components. A two-compartment, 4,000 gallon machine, known as the Tyne, it has two 200-g.p.m. pumps, Almost as large is the single-compartment frameless stainless-steel articulated 3,150-gallon tanker, designed for a working pressure of 20 lb. per sq. in. This is comparable with a two-compartment 3,000gallon stainless-steel milk tank on an A.E.C. Mammoth Major chassis, also d;splayed. The tank is insulated with I-in. Onazote and aluminium.
V INCENTS Stand 102 Vincents of Reading, Ltd., Station Square, Reading.
SOLE exponent of the open " chars-abane " type of vehicle is the extremely attractive coach based on a Dennis I.ancet III chassis. This has staggered seats for 26 passengers, curved, glazed eantrail panels and twin folding roofs giving a completely open top. Each seat embodies a locker and
an adjustable footrest. A fixed-roof 39-seater coach based on another Dennis Lancet chassis is also shown.

WELDED-STEEL channels reinforced VY with hardwood are the basis of the method of construction evolved and exhibited by this concern. One example is a 1,035-cubic-ft. pantechnicon basedon a Karrier 3-4-ton chassis, panelled in Plymax and protected internally by battens. Another is a box body of 700 cubic ft., mounted on a Thornycroft Trident chassis. WESTON Stand 107 Weston Works, Ltd., Weston Lane, Greet, Birmingham, 11.
ONCE a specialist in open touring coaches, this concern now shows two types of tipping gear. One, a single-ram type, is mounted on a Dodge 123 chassis, equipped with a steel body. The floor of this and the other exhibit on the stand is 4In. thick. The second vehicle displayed is a Morris-Commercial FV09/5 tipper equipped with twin-ram underbody gear and steel 41-cubic-yd. body.
WEYMANN'S Stand 25 Weymann's, Ltd., Addlestone, Surrey.
AA VEHICLE which has provoked much comment, Glasgow Corporation's Continental type single deck trolleybus is here exhibited by the bodybuilder. Seating only 28 and with room for 34 standing passengers, the vehicle, based on a B.U.T. two-axled chassis, is intended to help to overcome the city's peak-hour problems. Its capacity of 62 passengers compares with that of the 56-seater double-deck trolleybus for Bournemouth Corporation, based on a B.U.T. three-axled chassis. This has a front exit and rear entrance, another palliative for peak-hour difficulties. There is also the Leyland-M.C.W. Olympic 44-seater single-decker.
WHITSON Stand 77 lames Whitson and Co., Ltd., West Drayton, Middx.
AVING attracted much attention when on show in New York, and the holder of two awards gained at the Nice coach rally, the observation coach based on the conventional Foclen chassis has an enviable record. Two compartments seat 35 passengers, and Perspex panels in the roofs of both compartments give a high degree of visibility. Approximately 125 cubic ft. of luggage space is available at the rear. The moquette upholstery gives a leopardskin effect.

T AKING full advantage of the under'. floor position of the engine, this exhibitor has built a 42-seater service body on the A.E.C. Regal Mk. IV chassis. Overall length is 30 ft., and the front entrance is equipped with Glider doors. Although longer in wheelbase by 10 ins., the Daimler CVG6/SD chassis, which is the ,baSis of the other
single-decker shown, provides seating for only 34 passengers. This model has a rear entrance and is also a service-type vehicle. On a Daimler CVD6/DD chassis is mounted a standard 54-seater double-deck body finished in the attractive colours of Cleethorpes Corporation.

SPECIALIZING in long-distance touring, Sheffield United Tours, Ltd., is a connoisseur of luxury coaches, and the newest addition to its fleet, built and shown by Windovers. is proof of the
• company's experience. Based on an
A.E.C. Regal Mk. IV chassis, the vehicle seats 31 passengers, 26 in adjustable seats. A sandwich and cocktail bar is built into the front bulkhead, and a table is fitted between the rear wheelarches, with two pairs of inward-facing seats at the sides. An -automatic folding step is fitted beneath the emergency door on the off side.
A 39-seater coach body on a Foden
chassis with a two-stroke oil engine is the other exhibit. This has a double floor between which there is space for luggage.

EXHIBITING two vehicles fitted with its tipping gear, this concern is associated with its Show neighbour, Bromilow and Edwards, Ltd. On an Austin long wheelbase chassis is mounted a drop-sided wooden body with a steel floor, tipped by a D.64 enddischarge sub-frame type of gear incorporating a slanting cylinder. An Atkinson short wheelbase 6tonner displays the D. 64 end-discharge gear, which actuates. a 10-ft. 6-in. steel rectangular drop-sided body.

A FULL-FRONTED luxury coach based on a Dennis Lancet chassis represents the latest in coach body design. The construction is of composite type, and the vehicle is built to the new overall dimensions. Underfloor andrear luggage lockers are provided, and the bulkhead has been dispensed with. , On a Crossley chassis is mounted a general-purpose coach for normal use. The half-cab has been retained, but maximum seating capacity has been achieved within the new 30-ft, length.
