Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An Agricultural Query.

[1,685] " DEVONIAN " writes :—" As a reader of THE 'COBIMERCIAL MOTOR, I have been very much interested in the agricultural trials recently held. I am farming with my father, and we have thought of investing in a small -tractor for the farm. The size most suitable seems to me to be the 12-14 b.h.p. I know very little about motors, and I should be glad of your opinion. Our farm is hilly :ground, with small fields which average about five acres. " Is the — motor a suitable and good one? If it will cdo all that is claimed for it, it will be a useful machine in this part of the country.

" Would you also kindly give me your opinion of the -6-8 b.h.p. motor? This engine, according to infer-emotion sent to me, has been on the market for some years.

" Do you think an air-cooled engine is satisfactory? "

As-swee.—We cannot give an opinion on the first-named machine, as this is a new model which nobody out

side the works has, so far as we are aware, yet had an opportunity to see in service. We are unable to recommend the purchase of a — 6-8 h.p. model for use in your part of the country if, as you say, the fields are rather hilly. On level ground, we believe this small model works in a fairly-satisfactory manner, and cuts a single furrow on any reasonable land.

An air-cooled engine will not hold up to hard work for long periods, and, for that reason alone, it would be unsuitable for work in a hilly field. Probably the most useful machine you could purchase for sueh small fields would be an Ivel, or, if the makers can satisfy you by demonstrations that their 12-14 li.p, model will do all that you require of it, a Saunderson.
