Worried workers too scared to call in sick

TRANSPORT managers and bosses should pay particular attention to drivers' capacity to drive following a survey that discovered employees are too worried about their jobs to contemplate calling in sick.

Healthcare organisation Simplyhealth reveals that of the 1.031 workers it polled, more than 50% of the respondents said they were working through illnesses; and 20% feared that any illness would not be believed unless witnessed at work.

In 2009,43% of employees polled say they have not taken a sick day in the past 12 months, compared with 36% last year.

The UK is also suffering a tendency to overwork due to 'recession fever', with 58% of 1,600 respondents to an online survey conducted by Justeat.co.uk saying they

were working more unpaid hours than ever before. On average, employees were giving an extra four unpaid hours a week to their company, which is worth approximately f1.5bn to the UK economy.

A further survey conducted by Euroffice.co.uk discovered that 48% of owner-managers would remain in contact with their offices during their summer break.
