• The number of deaths on Britain's roads rose by 4% to 1,280 during the second quarter of this year over the same period last year — but serious injuries were down by 3%. Between March and June this year 54 HGV drivers were killed in traffic accidents, a drop of 14%, although the number of truck drivers who were seriously injured rose by 2% to 545.
The most significant rise is in the PSV sector, where 23 people were killed during the second quarter of 1987: almost three times the 1986 figure.
Over 52% of all deaths occurred on roads subject to a speed limit of more than 40mph (641on/h). This is in contrast to the first quarter of 1987, when the highest number of road deaths occurred in built-up areas.
Road traffic increased by 8% during the last quarter which, says the Department of Transport, brought the casualty rate per kilometre down by some 9%.
