Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck operators regularly running into, and out of, the heart of Britain's motorway network are being offered a new roadside repair service — called Red Triangle — by the West Midlands-based road transport group S Jones (Garages).

Red Triangle will provide hauliers with a 24-hour/365days-a-year, all-makes roadside assistance service within the main West Midlands motorway and A-road network, including the M6 northbound up to Junction 14; M54/Spaghetti Junction and Birmingham City Centre; M42; M45; and M69; as well as the MI between junctions 21 and 17.

S Jones will operate Red Triangle from its existing commercial vehicle workshops at Walsall and at Coventry, where its base is immediately adjacent to Junction three on the M6.

There is no signing-on fee for Red Triangle, rather assistance charges will be based on standard rates, with the typical roadside callout costing around £17 an hour. Fleet operators, however, will be able to negotiate discount rates and Red Triangle members will also qualify for discounts on all repair bills.

According to S Jones' workshop manager Brian Perrins, there is a gap in the recovery market for local roadside assistance.

He says: "If you're a member of a national breakdown set-up, you often have to rely on sub-agents for assistance. We don't profess to be in the national breakdown business — our aim is to cover our won area efficiently with our own mechanics."

S Jones is, however, agent for AA/BRS as well as National Breakdown and Octagon Recovery.

Perrins says that Red Triangle will be able to call on up to 40 mechanics and vehicle electricians at any time from its two depots. The emphasis on Red Triangle will be on road repairs, rather than recovery. "If we can provide roadside assistance, even temporary repairs we will do it," he says, "we aim to get the operator going again."

Hauliers will, alternatively be able to arrange recovery through Red Triangle either to S Jones' workshops or to their own premises.

To provide a flexible response, S Jones will hold a variety of breakdown kits, including fanbelts, air valves and filters for all trucks, although individual operators can specify any spares it wants Red Triangle to hold.

To join Red Triangle, operators can call a toll-free Red Triangle Linldine number on 0800 622950. After a creditworthiness check, operators will go onto the S Jones's computer listing.
