THE EEC Commission is backir moves to make the railwa more competitive with interr tional road transport by i creasing the speed of goo trains on the Continent.
Brussels has been inform by the International Rail Unii that it plans to raise speeds frc 80km/h to 90km/h in sor countries by 1990.
West Germany and Fran have already agreed to achie this speed by mid-1986 — B gium and Holland will probat be the next to follow.
"At present the railways z not at a disadvantage because price — in some cases we z cheaper than road transport," international railways expr working in Brussels told CM.
"The problem is getting t goods to the destination quick!
"To raise speeds we must fi eliminate all the old rolli stock, particularly in Italy and t Balkans where speeds are or 30-40km/h.
The Commission is urgi governments to help by redi ing technical and administrati checks at borders.
