Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Westmorland county council at its next quarterly meeting will be asked by its general purposes committee to continue the existing rural bus subsidies following the ending of the trial period and to ask the district councils to share the cost — estimated at considerably over £3800 a year — fifty-fifty with the county.

• Sunderland Corporation busmen who placed a 9 pm curfew on weekend bus services for two weeks in succession, because of attacks on crews, are to receive their normal bonuses for the time lost. Mr Alan Wright (transport manager) told the transport committee that, because of the stoppages, the employees would not normally receive certain bonuses, but in view of the circumstances, he thought they should still be paid.

• Stockton-on-Tees rural council is to introduce concessionary bus fares, estimated to cost £8000 annually, or the equivalent of lp rate. The concession will be worth £6 per annum to old, disabled and blind people. The cheap fares will be available on buses owned by Teesside Corporation, United Automobile Services Ltd, and Trim don Motor Services and will start in December.

• Newcastle upon Tyne Corporation has asked other local authorities on Tyneside to support a plan for a standard bus fare of l+p for pensioners and old people. The Corporation has received a petition with 10,000 signatures from Newcastle residents asking for the concession. At present, the Tyneside PTE allows old and disabled people to use its buses at half-fares. Before the PTE came into being, Newcastle Corporation had a special rate of 2d (old currency) for concession fares.

• Lanchester (Durham) rural council has decided to pay £3000 subsidy to the Northern General Transport Co Ltd to maintain a bus service between Lanchester, Tow Law and Stanley. The Stanley and Tow Law urban councils have refused to contribute towards the cost of the service.
