Cinderella or Ugly Sister?
• "Years ago road haulage was the Cinderella of transport. Now, with so much talk of blight and pollution, it seems to be an ugly sister, a 'villain of the piece'." This was the theme of a speech made by Mr Eric Russell, RHA secretary, at the Association's southern area annual dinner at Southampton last Friday.
"It occurs to me," Mr Russell continued, "that it's unfortunate, if not actually absurd, that the Minister for Transport Industries does not work within the Department of Trade and Industry which is responsible for all the industries served by road haulage. Mr Peyton's work is in the Department of the Environment which has responsibilities ranging from housing and local government to the establishment of bird sanctuaries and the preservation of wild life. I wonder if the placing of road haulage so strangely but so firmly among such ill assorted activities encourages it to be identified first and foremost as an environmental problem instead of first and foremost as a major basic industry."
