• The 1972 Finals of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition sponsored by CM will be held at Gamecock Barracks, Bramcote, on September 10. This decision was made last week at the competition's agm when the national organizing committee rejected the executive committee's recommendation to move next year's finals to Crystal Palace, London.

The executive's proposal followed a survey among the entrants of this year's finalists, of whom 64 per cent said they would enter the finals wherever they were held, and 9 per cent said they would only be interested if the event was at Bramcote.

There will be four physical tests in next year's eliminating events. Drivers will be required to reverse using mirrors only, then complete a width judging manoeuvre, park at a dummy kerb — with forward movement only — and finally judge the distance of objects ahead of them. The mileage minimum for the road route remains 10, but area secretaries have been asked to incorporate as many hazards as possible. Highway Code and legal questions will follow this year's pattern, but there will be a snap question on arrival, as at this year's Final.

Secretaries have been asked to encourage drivers to maintain their interest in road safety during the winter, and drivers will be encouraged to enter RoSPA and FTA safety quizzes.

The Scottish area of the RHA is to present a cup for competition at the finals among drivers from Scottish centres.

At the agm it was announced that Lord Chesham wished to vacate the presidency of the competition after the 1972 finals, because of the pressure of other commitments.

The executive committee was re-elected en bloc and the two outstanding vacancies were filled — by Mr B. H. L. Hale from Portsmouth and Mr A. R. Bates from Grimsby centre. The new PTA representative is Mr S. Gunnell.

Mr G. Steele, of Dunfermline, will be the normal occupant of the seat on the executive which has been allocated to the four East of Scotland centres.

Mr Jeff Chandler has been appointed assistant organizing secretary of the competition.
