Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STRONG complaints are being made by Liverpool furniture manufacturers about the inadequacy of transport for new furniture to certain parts of the country. It is alleged that the situation has become worse because of denationalization.

A private haulier who took over a British Road Services depot is said to have diverted a number of vehicles from the carriage' of new furniture to removals work. A haulier who specializes in new furniture has gained extra business and is understood to be making application to enlarge his fleet.

One manufacturer has stated that the transport position was acute, whilst another was said to have had to send goods destined for South Wales to London for onward transit.

175 B.H.P. ENGINE— FOR 2-TONNERS THE most powerful engine ever built by Studebaker is included in the specifications of this manufacturer's range of lorries for 1955. The unit is called the Power-Plus. It is of V-8 pattern and develops 175 b.h.p.

The Power-Plus is available for 2-ton models; whilst for 1-11-tonners it is derated to 156 b.h.p. For lighter types the company have produced the Econo-Miser V-8 and six-eylindered engines.

Automatic transmission is offered for goods models.

SEMI-TRAILERS POOLED TWELVE hauliers in the Middle West

of the U.S.A. have combined to form a service in which they will pool their semi-trailers. Known as the National Trailer Pool, Inc., the service will start next month and by the end of the year, it is hoped, will have Over 2,000 semi-trailers assigned to it.

The object of the service is to minimize empty running, and depots may in time be established all over the country. An order for 500 new semitrailers worth $4m. has been placed with the Fruehauf Trailer Co.

CROYDON TO SAVE £2,900 I NSTEAD of using eight motor vehicles, at an annual cost of £8,700 to collect kitchen waste, Croydon Highways Department propose to employ four in outer areas and in the inner districts five pedestrian-controlled batteryelectrics with one lorry. It is estimated that this will save £2,900 a year.

Following a trial of a Harbilt appliance, five have been ordered.

NEW FIELDS FOR RIBBLE TT is understood that Ribble Motor I Services, Ltd., are proposing to introduce their first tour to Northern Ireland next year. They have also applied to the North Western Licensing Authority for permission to operate a new feeder service from Chester to Liverpool to connect with extended tours emanating from there. Id. AFTER the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., had approached Burnley Transport Department with an offer to sell motor spirit to them at a price id. a gallon below that which was being paid to the three existing suppliers, negotiations were made with the suppliers which resulted in reductions in prices to the

level suggested by the Vacuum concern. The company have been recommended for inclusion in the list of suppliers to the corporation.

1,000 LORRIES WITH AUTOMATIC DRIVE ORDERED

A THOUSAND three-ton lorries with Hydra Matic automatic transmission have been ordered from the General Motors Corporation by the American Railway Express Agency. The transmission has four speeds. G.M.C. also offer eight-speed automatic drive for medium-weight vehicles. Estimated output of lorries byG.M.C. next year is 900,000, compared with a probable 835,000 for 1954.
