Three Single-decker Chassis, Two Maximum load Fourwheelers, and a 12-13-tonner. Four and Six-cylindered Oil and Petrol Engines Available as • Optional Equipment
be introduced at the Show, three types. of vehicle, all of which are entirely new, will be included in the 1938 range of Albion Motors, Ltd., Scotstoun, Glasgow. Each will be available in a number of forms and all models in the new range will be dis tinguished by the type symbol CX. It will comprise three passenger vehicles, having seating capacities for 32 to 40 persons, two 6-71-tonners and a 12-13-tanner.
To power these machines two new petrol and two new oil engines have been designed. In each case there is a fourand a six-cylindered unit. They are based, in the main, -on former Albion practice and in general layout resemble the earlier units, having overhead valves operated through push-rods from a camshaft carried high in the cylinder block. The petrol and oil engines of similar type are interchangeable in the chassis for which they have been built.
A new feature in this CX range is that the engine and gearbox are formed as a unit, which is carried in the chassis on a special form of threepoint flexible mounting which isolates engine vibration to a marked degree.
Dealing first with the goods chassis, the maximum-load four-wheeler is available with a four-cylindered engine, in which case it is designated CX1, or a six-cylindered D42 engine, when it is distinguished by the symbol CX3. The lowerpowered vehicle is intended for solo work, and the space occupied by the power unit has been kept down to the minimum in order to afford the maximum body ' space in relation to wheelbase lengths. It is available with a choice of wheelbases, the dimensions being respectively 12 ft. 6 ins., 14 ft. 3 ins., or 16 ft., and the corresponding body lengths -15 ft., 18 ft. and 20 ft. 9 ins.
The six-cylinder 6-7i-tortner is intended for trailer work, or for service where high power is an essential feature.
It has the same wheelbase dimensions as the four-cylinder chassis, but owing to the greater length of the engine the platform lengths afforded are respectively 14 ft., 16 ft. 9 ins. and 19 ft. 6 ins.
The third new goods model is a 12-13-tonner and is designated CX5. It is. available with either an oil or petrol six-cylindered engine and can he supplied with either single dr double drive. With regard to the rear bogie, the two rear axles are carried on a pair of semielliptic springs, the adjacent ends of which are linked to a rocking beam supported on a large-diarrieter trunnion bearing, this design having the effect of distributing the load in the chassis frame.
Although standardized with four speeds, the machine can be equipped with a fifth ratio which brings into play an overdrive. The mean wheelbase of this model is 18 ft. 3 ins., and it is designed to accommodate bodies up to 24 ft. in internal length.
Coming now to the passenger models, all, three are termed the Valkyrie, and all have a I7-ft. 7-in. wheelbase. Again, because of the different engine lengths, the seating capacity depends upon the unit installed.
Model CX9 has an Albion four-cylindered petrol or oil engine and can carry 35 to 40 seated passengers. Having a longer bonnet, housing a Gardner 5LW oil engine, These members are arranged both longitudinally and transversely, being bolted, respectively, to the side and cross-members of the chassis frame.
A six-cylindered engine forms the power Unit, the piston displacement being 3.627 lilies; the overhead valves are. operated by push-rods, and there are certain interesting features in connection with the cooling system. We might instance the system of. employing a pressed-in water distribution gallery from which jets are directed on to the hottest parts of the head, which promotes longevity of the valves, and seats. The crankshaft incorporates an harmonic. balancer and the piston's are of alutninium silicon-alloy 'and are tinplated. .
