Bus Results at Salford.

At the time when our analysis of municipal bus services was published in February last, the Salford Corporation was running a fleet of 55 buses, qMte a number of them being sixwheelers. In the statement -of • accounts for the year ended March 81st, which' has just been issued by the corporation, it is shown that the income from the operation of the• vehicles Was 1105,487, •whilt working expenses totalled .1101,386, thus leaving a balance of 14,101 to be carried to the profit and loss acCount: After meeting interest on loans (f2,222), and sinking hind instalments (14,262) and another small item of 148, and adding to the credit side the sum of fin in respect of bus interest, a deficiency of £1,828

results. The revenue per bus-mile amounted to 12.608d.; the expenditure on this basis was 12.118d.

Coach Owners Discuss Fares.

A conference was held a few days ago in Birmingham when representatives attended from' a number of roadtransport concerns which is running services between Birmingham and important centres. As a result of the discussions which enSued it was agreed to charge• a common rate for longdistance journeys, and a committee was appointed to' settle-the question' of prices for the summer season. A further meeting will be held in the early part of next year.'

it would appear that certain difficulties have arisen because some companies have charged very cheap fares' for return journeys in order to avoid the need for the coaches running empty.

Ossett Adheres to a.,Decision.

The Yorkshire (Woollen District) Electric Tramways, Ltd., has made a further application to Ossett Corporation for permission to operate a bus service between Ossett and Batley. A letter was sent which gave details of specified vehicles in respect of which the company desired licences, and such information was given to enable it, in the event of the corporation refusing to grant licences, to make an appeal, if desired, to the Minister of Transport: .The licensing committee declined to alter its previous decision.

Post Boxes for Chesterfield Buses.

In connection with the installation of post boxes on certain of the passenger vehicles of Chesterfield Corporation, the transport manager reports that the postoffice authorities are prepared to enter into an agreement to provide these boxes and to pay to the corporation the sum of 20s. per annum for each box. The authorities are also prepared to assume full responsibility for such boxes and to pay 6d. for each mail bag carried on any route. The terms have been approved by the corporation.

Bodies for Manchester's New Buses.

Further to our recent paragraphs concerning the decision of • Manchester Corporation to purchase 90. new buses, we now learn that the bodies of the vehicles will be supplied by the following manufacturers : Brush Electrical Engineering CO., Ltd., Strachans

• (Acton), Ltd. ; Short Brothers • (Rochester and Bedford), Ltd. ; and Messrs. William Arnold. A number of the vehicles will be built throughout at the works of Crossley Motors, Ltd.

Blyth May Run Buses, Blyth Town Council has instructed the trade and commerce committee to consider the question of promoting a General Powers • Bill in Parliament, • to enable the authority, amongst other things, to run municipal buses.

Burton Corporation has recently published details of 11 motorbus routes on which passenger-transport facilities will be provided when the tramvvays system is abandoned in December next.

The report of tlth general manager of Bradford Corporation Tramways, which we dealt with briefly in our last .week's issue, will be more fully reviewed in a later issue. Buses Wanted by Bournemouth.

The -tramways committee of Bournemouth Corporation has approved the proposal of an express 16-minute motor service to come into operation at the beginning of next season, and has instructed the general manager to report further with details as to the

type of bus toused. Upon receiving the repor tenders are to be invited for, 12 additional buses which will be required.

Carlisle Grants Licences. .

, The watch committee of Carlisle Corporation has granted ten bus licences to Emmerson and Co., Ltd., of Newcastle, in respect of services connecting Carlisle with Newcastle, Brampton and Wetheral. The committee has also granted a licence to Lowland Motor.

Stoke to Seek Bus-operating Powers.

A special committee appointed by Stoke-on-Trent Corporation has considered the -suggested acquisition of bus services in the city and the town clerk has been instructe,d to take the necessary steps to promote a Bill in Parliament to secure for the corporation powers to• pUrchase and operate them.

Railway Companies' Long-distance Road Service.

One day during last week the London and North-Eastern Railway Co. and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway • Co. commenced' the operation, of a joint road service between Sheffield and Manchester. The motor coaches being -used are A.E.C. 20-seaters and Thornycroft 32-seaters.
