• A truck driver who fumbled for a tobacco pouch on the floor of his cab caused the death of an elderly couple.
Gerald Steward of Finchley Road, Ipswich, crashed into the couple's car from behind. Steward, since sacked from his job, was sentenced to 90 hours' community service by St Albans Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by reckless driving.
The court heard how he tried in vain to pull the couple from their blazing car.
