AN EARLY opportunity to use the Marplan survey (CM, November 15) to support the Freight Transport Association's recommendation to the Armitage Inquiry for a 40-tonne gross weight limit was taken by the Association's president Len Payne.
• Speaking on the day following the Marplan release, he said that the public were less concerned about lorry weights than had been generally believed, and the Inquiry should not be apprehensive about a weight increase.
Mr Payne also called on a Transport and Road Research Laboratory report to reinforce the case for 40 tonnes. He said the report made the points that 40 tonnes on ten-ton axles would reduce the heavy vehicle fleet by 13 per cent or 15,000 vehicles, reduce road wear by between seven and 18 per cent and reduce operating costs by up to 13 per cent.
