THE FORD Transcontinental fac tory in Amsterdam is in dange of closing down.
This was suggested at a meet ing in Switzerland this weep when officials of Ford of Europ( acknowledged that there ha( been problems at the plant. Ab senteeism — up to 27 per cent and the lack of incentive on Um part of employees had led Eon to "look for an alternative tutu n for the plant".
Our Dutch correspondent be lieves this means a conversioi of the facility to the manufactun of components rather thai whole vehicles.
It is expected that 90' Transcontinentals will be pro duced this year and Ford claim that it is now a "well-acceptei and low-cost vehicle" — but th company acknowledges that th service back-up was poor at firsl AS EXPECTED, Sandbach Engi neering has closed its Londoi office as part of its drastic cam paign to reduce the overheads c the former Foden business (CII October 18).
But the company has assure' customers that this move doe not alter the level of service o contact with its Southern are management, and there ha been no change in the area' dealerships.
