THE SURFACES of som motorway hard shoulders al made from slurry seal — a ta mac-based material — and are lot less skid-resistant than tf carriageways. When the surfa( is broken or becomes smoor the anti-skid properties al lessened even further.
A Yorkshire coroner was to this last week at an inquest in' a fatal accident on July 20 th year when a coach skidded on section of the M62 under repz at Hartshead Moor.
Recording a verdict of acc dental death on a nine-year-o boy who died in the accident, ti coroner criticised the use of ti hard shoulder and We Yorkshire County Council's m nitoring system — the ha
shoulder had been used as a CE riageway for nearly thr( months and there had been accident reports.
