THE Western Licensing Authority last week refused to modify the B licence of Budleigh SaIterton Transport, Ltd., Exeter, to enable them to carry return loads from Bristol on a vehicle of 3+ tons unladen. The licence was stood with its previous conditions, allowing the carriage of lime, clay, sand, ballast and cement fur a number of customers.

Mr. A. H. Lock, assistant buyer of the St. Armes Board Mill Co., Ltd., Bristol, said that although the railways had given good service for 30-40 years, it had been necessary to change to road transport because the railways could not give daily deliveries. The applicants were preferred, as they could give personal service.

Mr. I. Alit, Bristol manager of Renwick. Wilton and Dobson, Ltd., coal and builders' merchants, said that he wished to have coal and grain conveyed from Bristol and Avonmouth, but admitted that he had no complaints about present arrangements.

British Road Services had at least one vehicle a day available for extra deliveries to Devon, said Mr. A. Baker, Exeter district traffic superintendent of B.R.S. Mr. L. Pratiey, for B.R.S. and the railways, said that a poor case had been made out by the applicants_ An application was granted for the renewal of an A licence for two vehicles, with a changed normal user to enable china clay to be carried for St. Annes Board Miff Co., LW.

A LL the 71 Leyland Titan PD3.5 rxdouble-deckers which Leeds Transport Department are to buy will have semiautomatic Pneurno -Cyclic gearboxes. Bodywork will be by Roe to provide 70 seats on 30-ft.-long chassis. The order, at £367,000, brings demands for Leyland 30-ft. double-deckers up to a value of £1.4m.
