CHANNEL TUNNEL MUST HAVE ROAD

BECAUSE road-haulage interests might not make full use of a Channel Tunnel if goods had to be loaded and unloaded from railway trucks at each end, it was vital for a road to be included in the tunnel scheme.

This was stated on Monday by M. Georges Gallienne, president of the Union Routiere de France, when he addressed the Parliamentary Channel Tunnel Committee.

He estimated that 200,000 lorries and 50.000 buses would use the tunnel each year, and it could be built in 10 years.
