Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CLAIMS of economical running and maintenance costs are made for the new six-wheeled models, which are shown in two forms—as a platform lorry and as a -van. With a wheelbase of 14 ft. 0-1. in., a platform area of over 140 sq. ft. is provided. The width is slightly more thad 7 ft. and the loading height is 3 ft. 101 ins., whilst the frontwheel track is 5 ft. 3 ins, and the bogie track 5 ft. 91 ins. The tyre equipment is 160 mm. by 720 mm. front and 160

mm. by 771 tam. rim fitting on the bogie wheels.

Following normal Sentinel practice, the engine suspension is effected by truncated spheres held in brackets and attached to the main frame at the gearshaft centre. At the front end of the power unit a flat strip of steel retains the engine, so that it can move in any direction irrespective of the chassis..

Poppet valvesare included in the ea

gine specification and, in conjunction with carefully streamlined passages for the steam, provide an increase in power of about 15 b.h.p. over previous Sentinel engines. Foist valves are arranged, of course, to each cylinder, the exhausts, which are slightly larger than the inlets, being found underneath the cylinders, where they facilitate draining Constant circulation is provided for the lubricant in the engine and gearbox.

A point of note is the manner in which the crankshaft can be extracted merely by undoing a ring of nuts on the side of the crankcase and removing one roller bearing. The connecting-rod bearings are accessible through covers in the crankcase, these being sufficiently large to allow the whole assembly line to be withdrawn—after removing the piston heads, of course. All tappets are easily adjustable and, by virtue of the clean design, spanners can be brought into effect on the adjusting nuts with comparative ease. All the valves are arranged in staggered formation,so that they can be withdrawn for cleaning or replacement without dismantling any extraneous parts.

Chain drive is employed very largely In order to keep the unsprung weight down to the lowest possible amount. The two front wheels of the bogie are driven from the gearshaft by a pair of Chains, the secondary drive to the rear wheels of the bogie being taken by a further pair of chains. The whole cf the rear-axle load is taken by means of a large-diameter tapering hollow shaft, on the ends of which are mounted pairs of arms capable of oscillating about the centre line of the shaft. Between these two arms the wheels are carried, thus the axle itself and a pro portion of the arms may be considered as " sprung " weight.

A comprehensive adjustment is provided for both axles in order to maintain the correct tension for the chains. Semi-elliptic springs are fitted with overloading leaves in such a manner that the longitudinal location is effected by

radius rods, which control the movement of the axles.

With a platform 13 ft. 6 ins. by 7 ft., a Super Sentinel three-way tipper is exhibited and costs £952 5s. The chassis is priced at 1883. A short-platform Super Sentinel is also exhibited, the price of the chassis being £795 1.5s.

Known colloquially as the sports tractor--a short vehicle with what might be termed a streamlined tail—is also on view.
